How Good Is Your Memory?
I recently conducted an online web poll on my web site. The question was,
'How Good is Your Memory?' Here's how GON readers responded...
37% Excellent. I rarely forget anything!
40% I can remember things from years ago, but can't remember what I had for
breakfast today.
13% I can remember something I did 5 minutes ago, but my entire past is pretty
fuzzy.
10% My memory is horrible. I'm lucky I remember to get dressed in the morning.
When it comes to memories, there are many experts who believe there are three
ways in which we can store memories:
1) First is the sensory stage, which is the stage in which a memory is
spurred, like from a visual, a sound, a smell, etc.
2) Second is short-term memory. The capacity of short-term memory is
fairly limited. It can generally hold seven to ten items for about 20 or 30
seconds at a time, but has the ability to increase if you're using memory
techniques, like dividing a social security number into three parts.
3) Third is long-term memory. Short-term memory sometimes turns into
long-term memory. For instance, if the same information is repeated or used
frequently, or if it has particularly special (or traumatic) meaning to you, it
tends to stick around longer.
Whether you're pretty darn good at remembering everything...or not so hot at
remembering anything, these 10 tips can help improve your memory from any stage:
1) Nix the sugar. Cutting back significantly on it can improve your
memory and your overall health. This includes eating a lot less refined carbs,
like ready-to-eat breakfast cereal, white bread, cake, candy, white rice, and
fruit juice.
2) Get ample sleep. When your body is tired and sluggish, your mind tends
to be as well.
3) Exercise your brain. Try to learn something new every day. Share that
information with someone else. Do crossword puzzles. When you watch TV, try to
memorize everyone's TV name...and their real names.
4) Get moving. According to Healthline, 'exercise may increase the
secretion of neuroprotective proteins and improve the growth and development of
neurons, leading to improved brain health.'
5) Eat well. Foods with anti-inflammatory properties have been known to
stop cognitive decline. The healthiest choices are nutrient-rich vegetables and
fruit, preferably raw. Wise words by Michael Pollan, 'If it came from a plant,
eat it; if it was made in a plant, don't.'
6) Hydrate. It takes only 2% dehydration for your memory, attention, and
other cognitive skills to diminish.
7) Record it and use reminders. One of the very best ways to ensure you
don't forget things you want to remember is to record it, either digitally, or
with pen and paper. The sooner you write it down, the better. This can range
from making a simple grocery list, to writing up a TO DO list, to journaling
your life. Make use of reminders too, like phone alarms, or sticky notes placed
strategically where you'll see them every day.
