Help...I Am Having Trouble Letting These Go...

A GON Reader Asks:

Hi Maria, I am a clutter phobe, all my family knows it...but what I am having trouble departing with are my two grandmothers' china sets.

They are all neatly in 3 bins (of course they are!) but are taking up shelf space (I LOVE empty shelf space) because they are not being used.

I thought of using them every day, but one set is silver lined and my kids would put them in the microwave. I'm a minimalist so displaying them is out.

WHERE can I get rid of them and earn some nice cash?

This fabulous GON reader 'Ask Maria' question was submitted by:

Maria Gracia responds:

Hi Jennifer, Thanks so much for your question. I have to be perfectly honest. These days, even the best-quality china can be extremely difficult to sell for any significant amount of money. But it's certainly worth a shot, and you may be one of the luckier sellers.

If I were attempting to sell these china sets, I'd start by getting an idea of how much they're worth. Take a peek on eBay, searching for them by any markings...usually found on the underside of the plate...brand name, approximate year, and any other descriptive words like 'silver' or 'floral.' In doing so, you may be able to get an idea of how much others are selling the same, or similar, sets for. You can also visit a few reputable antiques stores in your area and have them appraised.

Once you're armed with that information, if you feel they're worth enough for you to sell, you might try selling them on your own using a site like eBay. In doing so, you can set your price and keep your fingers crossed. In some cases, doing so will pay off. As a word of caution, if they sell, you're going to have to be extremely diligent about packing them in a safe way to avoid breakage in shipping.

Alternately, you can see if a consignment shop is willing to try to sell for you. You won't get paid until they sell it...and once they do, they're going to take a cut of your profit.

A third option, which actually may be your best approach, is to check out the International Association of Dinnerware Matchers: http://iadm.com

They make you an offer, and if you accept it, you're responsible for shipping it to them, as well as shipping and handling costs. They, in turn, sell it to someone else for a significantly higher price.

Hope this helps you begin your project!

Maria

No matter what your dog's problem behavior is, be it jumping, peeing inappropriately, aggression, pulling on the leash...or whatever, there is ONE SOLUTION that can help STOP this problem now.

The sad fact is, most dog trainers miss this solution entirely. They give you cookie cutting training programs. They use outdated and `mean' dominance techniques. Or worse yet, they have no qualifications and are complete phonies. So what's the answer to stopping your dog's behavior problems? In 5 simple words...

Discovering your dog's hidden intelligence.

Let me explain. More intelligent dogs are better behaved. A more intelligent dog takes commands easier and understands what you need from them. The good news is, no matter how clever you think your dog is, you can unlock their hidden intelligence quickly and easily.

Don't waste a second longer coping with problem behaviors you don't need to be dealing with. Visit this link to learn more about Brain Training for Dogs:
