Hi Maria,

What are the essential things for a small guest room. Any ideas how to organize those items?

Hi Yvette,

Thank you for asking. Here's what I recommend:

1. A comfy bed. In my house, we have a pull-out sofa bed with a good-quality mattress. Be sure to include fresh sheets and pillowcases, a blanket, an extra blanket (just in case), and pillows. I keep 4 pillows in this room...two firm and two soft...each hypoallergenic.

2. A bedside table with a reading light (could be an actual standing lamp or a portable reading light.)

3. Extra towels. Two bath towels, 2 face towels, and 2 hand towels per person...or more if you don't do a load of wash every day.

4. A wastebasket.

5. Water bottles and coasters.

6. A clock. Yes, even though most people have and use their cell phones, a clock that one can glance at is always convenient.

7. Power outlets for phones and devices. If there's only one outlet in the room, include a power strip with multiple outlets, as well as an extension cord if applicable.

8. Your home's WI-FI network name and password.

9. Space for clothes. I always am sure there is 'hanging space' in the closet along with assorted hangers...and drawer space as well. If you're short on space in this room, consider adding hooks or shelves to increase storage space for your guests.

10. An iron/ironing Board. If you're sharing the household iron and ironing board, you might not need to include an extra, but your guests should be able to press a shirt or dress if needed.

11. A box of tissues.

12. Basic toiletries (Bath soap, face soap, shampoo, conditioner, spray deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash, a few new (packaged) tooth brushes, lotion, feminine products, a few disposable razors)

13. A full-length mirror...unless you have one in the guest bathroom.

14. A hair dryer.

15. A TV channel guide and instructions for using the remote.

16. A nightlight.

17. Something to read (books or magazines)

18. Maps and some addresses of local eateries, gas stations, ATM locations, etc. if your guests will be out and about on their own

19. A notepad and pen.

20. A chocolate or two (or other treat) for each guest pillow.
