Surprise Party for You?
In an online poll, we recently asked GON Readers, 'How would you feel if someone
threw a surprise party for you?' Here are the results:
49% Fabulous...I love surprises!
30% I wouldn't love it and I wouldn't hate it.
21% Please don't....I hate surprises!
I found it interesting that nearly 50% of those who responded would LOVE a
surprise party...and another 30% would be OK with one. That's nearly 70% of
my readers.
I'm on the fence about surprise parties. On one hand, for those throwing the
surprise parties, in most cases, they're being done from the heart. I appreciate
anything that is done in such kindness. Plus, surprise parties tend to involve
the people in my life that I care about, so it's always lovely to get together
with them.
On the other hand, I prefer to be prepared. So, it throws me a little bit off
base when I had one plan in my head for the day or evening, and another plan
takes over.
Some people don't like surprises because it makes them nervous. Others don't
like the commotion or large gatherings. I once saw one person literally faint
from the excitement of a crowd of people yelling surprise...and it took hours
for her to recover.
If you're planning to throw a surprise party for someone, be sure they actually
like surprises, because if they don't, it may not be as fun for them as you may
be picturing in your head. Surprise parties take work, and it's going to be a
let down for you if you go to all that trouble and the person on the receiving
end is not happy.
For instance, my husband does not like surprise parties at all...and I would
never throw one for him. I could, however, surprise him with tickets to a
theater performance with friends, for example, for a date that's at least a few
weeks away. I know what's on his calendar, so there would not be a conflict, I
know what he's interested in, and he'd have enough time to plan ahead...but he'd
still be surprised and pleased to get the tickets. Plus, sometimes the
anticipation of something coming up on the horizon can be as fun as the actual
event.
I recently attended a 50th birthday party. The guest of honor, Tom, knew it was
happening, and it wasn't a surprise party. His wife, Stephanie, did not have to
conceal the party-planning and she didn't have to worry about anyone leaking the
fact that a party was happening. Even though this party wasn't a surprise, Tom
had a wonderful time...and so did his guests.
If you are throwing a surprise party for someone who loves surprises, when
inviting guests make sure you're very clear about the fact that it's a surprise
so the cat doesn't get let out of the bag. And be wary of telling young
children...most are not great at keeping secrets. I can't tell you how many
times I've seen these two issues ruin the surprise. Also, if you plan to yell
'Surprise!' to your guest of honor at 7P, for example, be sure you tell your
guests to be there by 6P. I've also seen surprise parties fall apart when the
guest of honor is walking in...and his relative from another state who he hasn't
seen in three years arrives at the same time.
Finally, if you wish someone would throw a surprise party for you, you can
always drop hints here and there such as, 'Uncle Randy's surprise party was
awesome...surprise parties are the best!' or 'I can't imagine how anyone could
not love a surprise party. They are so fun!'
