Stop Squeezing in One More Thing

For so many of us, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. Between work, school, kids' sports, taking care of aging parents, and/or the constant flow of things, it can sometimes seem overwhelming. Oddly enough, many of us continually try to squeeze in more thing (sometimes many more things) to our already packed schedules. When this happens, it's very easy for scheduling conflicts to occur and for stress to increase dramatically. What to do?

1) One calendar per family: Most of the time, each family member's schedule affects other family members. Because of this, it's very easy, when everyone has their own calendar, to double- book. For instance, if my husband had his own exclusive calendar, he might OK a business meeting on a day he and I need to be at my daughter's school for an event.

This is why we have ONE calendar in our family. As soon as an event comes up, we get it on the calendar. If we have a meeting, on the calendar it goes. If there is a sporting event coming up, it gets put on the calendar. Any medical or dental appointments immediately get included on the calendar.

In doing so, we can easily see everything that's coming up in any given day...we don't accidentally double-book anything, and we can use it for making decisions...without having to check with one another. For instance, if we need to make an appointment with the accountant and she wants to meet on the 20th of the month, if that day is already packed pretty full on the calendar, we simply choose another day for that appointment.

Cozi Family Calendar is a good calendar for keeping all family members on the same page at all times, and helps us prevent super-chaotic days.

2) Limit your involvement: It's a good thing to help out others when needed. Many things in our community rely heavily on the help of volunteers. Schools are always looking for help. Churches depend on the volunteering of members to fill tons of jobs that need to be done. Charities lean on the good will of community members to reach their goals. All of these things are definitely worth the time put in.

But not everything needs to be done by YOU.

Although it may seem difficult to say no to people, overloading your schedule with too many obligations can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

By all means, help out whenever you are able. But on the occasions where your family calendar is already overloaded for the month, take a step back and let somebody else take a turn. You will undoubtedly have more chances in the future to step up to the plate.

3) Pencil in some down time: In the chaos of everyday life, there is one person we always seem to neglect. That person is ourselves. We make time for family members, church groups, neighbors, school events and anyone else who needs us. The last person that gets tended to is ourselves.

You may glance at your calendar and say to yourself, 'Are you kidding me. There's no time for me. I have a million things to do.' This is exactly the point you should stop and breathe. If there is too much on your calendar to take care of you, your highest priority goal should be to change that. This may require you to stop or streamline something you're doing, but it's necessary for your health and well-being.

At the beginning of the month, schedule in some down time for YOU and then make sure you stick to it. Even if it is only one fun night a month for yourself, that may be all you need to refuel your jets. Taking care of yourself is as important as taking care of others, so don't cheat yourself out of necessary and well-deserved down time.
