  Funny Organizing Story

How a Good Friend of Mine
Kept Clutter at Bay This Week

One of the things I love doing is taking a few hours every three-or-so weeks to visit a local coffee shop and enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation with my good friend, Stephanie.

On our last get together, Stephanie (who, mind you, NEVER buys anything for herself) told me that she purchased eight new pairs of high-quality shoes. Apparently, she was able to get a 'friends and family' deal, through someone she knows, at a name-brand shoe company...and ended up getting new boots, sneakers, casual shoes, and dress shoes...8 pairs for under $200.

So, I said to her, 'Well, I'm assuming you gave up eight pairs of your current shoes, right?'

She replied, 'Kind of.'

And then she said, 'I donated three pairs of MY shoes, and five pairs of MY HUSBAND's shoes.'

Thank goodness I wasn't holding hot coffee in my hand at that moment, because I burst out laughing...and then she did as well. That's certainly one way to keep your clutter at bay without feeling the stress of having to give away YOUR own stuff. (Smile.)

Although I'm not writing this to suggest you declutter your spouse's belongings for your own benefit (smile) or suggesting you run out and buy eight pairs of shoes, the overall 'one in, one out' concept is a good reminder nonetheless. If you're going to make a purchase of something, if you can give that same volume away (or get rid of it in some cases), then your home's clutter will not grow. Better yet, if you can give slightly more away than you took in, your clutter will actually decrease. This is a good organizing concept to keep in mind.

Another tip here...invest in time with friends and people you enjoy...those that care about you and those that make you laugh. They make life that much brighter!
