I Own Tons and Tons of Cosmetics
A GON Reader Asks:
Hi Maria,
I have tons of cosmetics. Seriously, I think I'm a make-up addict. My
'collection' is all in my bathroom, taking up space on my counter (I have a
make-up organizer on the counter, but I've run out of space to hold it all).
It's also in my two pull-out drawers, and in four dollar-store containers in
the bathroom storage space.
The volume doesn't really bother me, although I'll admit that I don't use the
majority of it. What happens is, I buy something, I like it for awhile, and
then something new comes along that interests me, so I buy that. The result,
as you have probably guessed, is tons and tons of cosmetics.
My live-in boyfriend confronted me about it this weekend, and told me I really
should weed it out. But I really don't want to because when I look at it, and
think of all the money I've spent on it, I just can't bear to toss it.
Do you have any thoughts on this?

Maria Gracia responds:
Hi Maddie,
Thank you for your note and for being a loyal reader! Here are my thoughts on
your make-up collection.
1) You first indicated, in your note, that the volume of your make-up doesn't
bother you. However, from what you described about your make-up collection, your
phrases obviously indicate an overload...and frustration. You used phrases like
'taking up space,' 'I've run out of space,' 'don't use the majority of it,'
'tons and tons.' Plus, you wrote to me to ask about it, so deep down, it seems
to me that you're in agreement with your boyfriend about his request.
2) If you're sharing the bathroom with your boyfriend, it may be negatively
affecting him. Perhaps he is running out of space for his stuff? Maybe he
doesn't like seeing the clutter? Definitely take this into consideration. If
he's noticing a problem, maybe there is one.
3) If you said to me, 'Maria, I use all of my makeup often,' then, I'd simply
tell you how to better store it. BUT, because you said to me that you don't
use most of it, my advice to you is to a) weed out what you have and b) stop
buying more. Makeup can be very expensive. I'm sure you wouldn't open your
windows and throw hundreds or thousands of dollars out the window. But this
is kind of what's happening here.
4) I know it's very difficult to part with anything you've spent a lot of money
on. The reality is, however, that the money is already spent, and whether the
make-up is in the trash or sitting in your cabinet unused, the fact that the
money was already spent and can't be given back is 'one in the same.' So, better
getting rid of it and gaining back something...your counter space, your drawer
space, your bathroom storage space, and the appreciation of your boyfriend!
5) To help ensure more cosmetics don't continue to come into your life fast
and furious, I recommend:
a) Write yourself a 'makeup limit list.' For example, allow yourself no more
than THREE each of lipsticks, blushes, foundations, mascaras, etc. The rest
goes.
b) Before you buy anything new, the old one must go. Make that a hard and fast
rule...and stick with it.
6) Finally, here's some very good news. You don't have to toss your old makeup
out...unless it's really old and expired. Almost every community has a women's
shelter that would love your gently-used makeup. Contact local women's shelters
in your area and find out what they'll accept. You'll be weeding out your
collection and helping others at the same time!
Hope this helps!
