Perspectives from a Dollar Store Cashier

A couple of things, Maria, and hi!

1) I just checked out a book from the library called, 'Glitter and Glue' by Kelly Corrigan. It is such a must read.

2) Second, I work in a dollar store. I check out parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents buying cards, small baby gifts, old gnarled hands and smiles, and counting out change and cutting back to buy something for that child, grandchild, great-grandchild. I want to say, to the kids who receive the gifts, please write a note of thank you or pick up the phone. I have been a step mom, step grandparent, regular grandma and in all the twenty years of sending gifts, never received a thank you. As parents and grandparents age, they get lonely and a small card and/or a call is much appreciated.

3) Finally, with holidays fast approaching, again as I check out the older customers who still write checks, not only is it hard on them, they have to give out so much information to write a check, and it is so hard on them to physically write and remember. Help them by buying a gift card to their favorite store, show them how to find the balance of the card, how to guard it, how to reload it. Or help them set up a debit card at their bank. I so hate to see them struggle at the check-out when we have a dozen people in line.

4) If nothing else, treasure the little gifts they give you when they do. It may not be much, but realize the thought and care that went into its choosing.

Follow Up Note from Maria Gracia:

Sue,

I love ALL of your points and perspectives! I agree...expressions of thanks are a must when a gift is given. First, it allows the gift giver to know that the gift was received (if it wasn't given in person). Second, it's the gracious thing to do...whether you're a child or an adult.

Gift cards make wonderful gifts...and your thoughts about how helpful they can be to seniors were on-point!

Thanks also for the book recommendation...I've added it to my TO READ list. Here is the Amazon link for any of my readers who may be interested:

Warm regards,

Maria

  In Closing

'Love is made up of three unconditional properties in equal measure:

1. Acceptance
2. Understanding
3. Appreciation

Remove any one of the three and the triangle falls apart.

Which, by the way, is something highly inadvisable. Think about it. Do you really want to live in a world of only two dimensions?

So, for the love of a triangle, please keep love whole.'
