50 Boxes to Sort

A GON Reader Asks:

I live in a condo building in Phoenix. I have at least 50 banker boxes in a second bedroom, on the balcony, and in the laundry room that I need help going through, for future sale or donation. I need help with the decision-making, starting as soon as possible.

This fabulous GON reader 'Ask Maria' question was submitted by:

Rhonda Juster, Phoenix, Arizona

Maria Gracia responds:

Hi Rhonda,

Set up four bags or boxes and label them: Sell, Donate, Garbage and Keep. Open up and go through one box at a time, sorting each item as you remove it into one of the four categories. Of course, you'll need to set up more than four boxes for each (for instance, you might need 10 boxes labeled Donate), but you'll be able to do so as you empty boxes.

Sell or Donate: If you plan on hosting a garage sale in the 'near' future, I would put anything that is in good enough condition for someone else to use in boxes labeled Sell. Whatever doesn't sell at your sale should get donated. If you're not planning to host a garage sale very soon (no later than spring 2019), put it in the Donate pile, and begin donating boxes as they fill up. If you have very valuable items that turn up, get them appraised. If they're worth a lot, you can try selling on an auction web site or to an antiques store.

Garbage: Anything that is broken, outdated beyond good use, or otherwise unusable should be trashed. As boxes fill up, put them out with the trash, or dispose of them at city facilities if certain items, like electronics, can't be included with your regular trash pick-up.

Keep: Since there are 50 boxes, I would be very discerning about what goes in the Keep box. That category should be the smallest one.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, work on one to two boxes each day.

It's very easy to 'wait' to get items out of your house. Don't do this because it will look like you're not making progress. Every time you fill a box with donation items, put it in your car. The next time you're out, you can drop it off at your nearest Goodwill or other second-hand store. Put items for trash out at the curb on trash day. When a box fills with your Keep items, take a few minutes to put everything from that box in an apporopriate home in your house.

Just remember, with each item you decide on and every box you empty, you're getting closer to your goal. I would love to hear your progress on this...let me know when you're at the halfway point...and take photos along the way!

Maria
