Are You Running on Empty?
Do you feel some days (or maybe even most days) like you're running on empty?
Maybe you barely have the energy to cook at dinnertime, but you know you have to
find the get-up-and-go, somehow, because you have a long list of TO DOs that
need to be handled.
Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies and we really don't have to be in this
type of low-energy rut. Sometimes all it takes to power-up is eating a better
diet, staying more hydrated, exercising more, getting more shut-eye, or easing
our social engagements, for instance. These are all things we can control
and fix.
Sometimes, we find ourselves down with the flu or some other short-term illness
that will be better soon. In this situation, rest now and work later.
Other times, we might find ourselves in a low-energy situation because of a
chronic illness, someone else's illness (maybe you're someone's caregiver), or
some other life-changing challenge...something that's all, or mostly, out of
your control. If this is the case, here are some ways you can still get things
done:
1) Break chores into chunks: It's okay to do just the sinks and mirrors
in the bathrooms today and clean the tubs tomorrow. Not everything has to be
completed in one day. But everything you DO complete is progress, so celebrate
your wins.
2) Think 'time' versus 'topic': Pick a room, area, or project. Challenge
yourself to handle whatever it is for a set period of time, like 10 minutes. Set
a timer and work until it goes off. At that point you may need to rest OR you
may feel energized enough to work another 10 minutes.
3) Lower your expectations: What can you reasonably accomplish today?
Maybe you determine you have enough energy to organize one drawer and answer
your work email. Sometimes you need to relax your standards and accept your
limitations.
4) Find ways to conserve your energy: You might sit down while folding
laundry or peeling potatoes. You may need to work for 20 minutes and then sit
down for 20 minutes...before you work again.
5) Utilize technology whenever possible: Whether this is getting a Roomba
vacuum, paying your bills online, or upgrading the computer software you use for
a work project that will get the job done in an easier manner, take advantage of
technology.
6) Reduce your clutter: Doing so will make cleaning easier. Try weeding
out 3 unnecessary items a day. That's do-able and little by little, the clutter
will disappear. Limit the amount of physical items and papers entering your
house.
7) Find someone to help you out: This might include hiring outside help
(a house cleaner, a professional organizer, a lawn care company, a handyman) to
give you a hand. This also might include delegating household errands and chores
to other household members, or delegating work projects to co-workers or
freelancers, if applicable.
Sometimes we need to remember how to be kinder to ourselves and realize if
something doesn't get accomplished today it isn't the end of the world. It will
still be there tomorrow. Give yourself a break. Speak nicely and gently to
yourself. Celebrate ALL of your accomplishments, no matter how small you
perceive them to be. Whatever you do, you're further along than you were
before...and that's a good thing.
