Old House Smell

A GON Reader Asks:

We bought a house that we are restoring that is over 100 years old and it definitely has that old house smell. The basement does have some dirt areas. I do use Damp Rid. We don't currently live in this house full time, so it is closed up for a couple weeks at a time. Any tips you could share would be appreciated.

Maria Gracia responds:

Hi Debbie! Restoring a century-old house with modern tools and materials can be very rewarding and I hope your experience doing so is enjoyable. Some of these tips should help you out.

1. Start by keeping nose and mouth covers nearby to block out any of those 'unwelcome' scents and odors when you're working in the house. This will also be useful if any hazardous materials are hiding in those walls.

2. In the basement, use Damp Rid (moisture absorber) to absorb any moisture lurking around the floors and wipe and/or sweep away dirt as well.

3. Place several plug-in fans around the house to help get rid of odor. Use extension cords if necessary.

4. Are you planning on removing the original carpeting from the house? Carpets tend to collect lots of odor. Plush carpeting tends to hold on to the most. If not, sprinkle baking soda on the flooring and carpeting...leave overnight... and vacuum or sweep up the next day.

5) Check out the roof and the floor of the house's main level. If the roof has leaks, cover it immediately with tarps so no further moisture can collect inside which worsens odors.

6) Open all the windows and draw back the curtains when you're there. You could also leave upstairs windows open, when you're not there, to air the house out. Fresh air and sunlight go a long way when it comes to a fresh smelling home.

7) Thoroughly clean sinks, toilets, showers, and such, with anti-bacterial cleaners to kill any bacteria.

8) Place bowls of activated charcoal in any areas for at least 3 days, specifically closets and basements, that smell musty.

9) Mold can cause a lot of odor, so if any signs of mold are present, hire a professional to examine and remove it from the premises. If mold is removed, it should greatly improve the air quality throughout the house and ensure that it's a more healthy environment.

10) For the dirt area in your basement, that may be an area where moisture is growing mold. Seal dirt floors with concrete.

Thanks for writing, hope some of this helps, and please let me know how the restoration goes. Send photos...I'd love to see them!

Maria
