Shower Curtain Rings Falling Off, Curtain Ripping

A GON Reader Asks:

Hi Maria,

Do you have any suggestions for preventing the shower curtain from unhooking, and then tearing? I tried eyelets, like for filing, but they don't stick long enough on the plastic curtain. I tried masking tape, but that also came unstuck. Any ideas? Thank you!

This fabulous GON reader 'Ask Maria' question was submitted by:

Moira Lacotte, La Rochelle, France

Married, two grown children (out of the house now, except my daughter, who has been an aupair in the US for a year, and is coming home soon). My husband is visually handicapped, and I just have to remain patient with him. He can't always help it when he doesn't pick up/clean up after himself.

Maria Gracia responds:

Hi Moira! Bless your heart...and your patience. To answer your question...

There are both vinyl and cloth shower curtains. Vinyl ones are more fragile, along the top where the rings are, if pulled on. The cloth shower curtains tend to be more sturdy. In one of my bathrooms, I use a vinyl shower liner and a cloth shower curtain. I replace the liner once a year, since it's so inexpensive to do so.

One of the biggest reasons the shower curtain unhooks, and the holes in the curtain and/or liner begin to rip, is opening and closing the shower curtain very quickly. Taking a bit more care to be gentle and slow can help prevent this problem. That being said, this is not always an easy message to get across for the typical, busy, family.

Let's talk about the rings. There are many kinds of shower curtain 'rings' these days. The plastic kind often snap in place, creating an unbroken circle, which is going to offer you the best chance of the rings and the shower curtain staying put. That being said, it's hard to resist some of the more decorative 'fish hooks' available these days.

Sometimes, the hooks are too large for your shower curtain rod. If this is true with yours, and your hooks are made of a bendable material, try bending the ends of your hooks with pliers to make them wrap more tightly and securely against the shower curtain rod.

I noticed that Amazon sells hooks that have 'easy glide roller ball' technology, specifically made to stay on the rod without falling off...and without snagging. They're pictured in the photo at the top of this article. Here is the link to check them out: https://amzn.to/2Pj1KSP

Also, when you buy shower curtain hooks, be sure you're buying as many as are required for your curtain...so that every single hole has a hook to go with it. You may have to buy two sets of hooks to accomplish this.

There are also several different kinds of curtain rods made from different materials. Some are smoother than others, which allow the rings to glide along smoothly so they won't catch and tear. If you're not in the market for a new rod, you can try waxing or oiling the curtain rod a bit to make sliding the curtain easier.

I hope a tip or two above helps solve this problem for you!

Maria
