Reflections and Goals
We are about to begin a New Year. And who doesn't love the idea of a fresh
start? We get a chance to begin again with a clean slate. We make resolutions or
set goals in a burst of enthusiasm and hope. It feels wonderful!
But all too often, by the time January turns to February (or sometimes sooner),
we find that we have derailed. We've slipped back into comfortable, old habits.
We wonder what happened to that giddy motivation and those good intentions. We
may become discouraged that change seems so hard.
So, how do we avoid the February-funk and stay true to the goals we have set for
ourselves? Why do we try year after year to make positive changes only to fall
short? This year take advantage of the this last day of the year first...and
then make plans for 2019. Here's how:
Reflect: The single most significant step for a successful New Year
should be taken before it begins. We need to close out 2018 by taking some quiet
time to reflect on the year that is about to end. Think about the goals and
plans you had for this past year. What successes did you have? What
disappointments or obstacles did you experience? Ask yourself what worked, what
didn't, and why? What did you learn about yourself and what motivates you? By
reviewing and reflecting on 2018, we can use what we learned to make better
choices and decisions in the future.
Set Goals: With the above exercise in mind, take time to visualize where
you would like to be by this time next year. Even more importantly, ask yourself
why each goal is important and how you want to feel by making these changes.
Avoid making a long list of resolutions that might just set you up for failure.
Consider instead one or two areas in which your desired changes would make the
most difference in your life. Then focus on these.
This doesn't mean you're locked into your choices or that you can't change your
mind or set new goals as the year goes on. You might take the first day of each
month to review your progress and adjust as necessary. And remember, setbacks
are inevitable and part of being human, so build into your goals a plan for what
you will do when you stumble. So what if you have been doing great and then you
eat the chocolate bar, or smoke that cigarette, or yell at your kids? Take a
deep breath and get right back on track. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
Start small and let the confidence you get from your successes spur you on to
achievements in other areas of your life.
May 2019 be your best, most organized, happiest year ever!
