Keep Your Project Moving Along Without Your Interest Fizzling Out
There's nothing quite like the feeling I get when a project or goal I've been
working hard on is complete...and done well. Times like these are definitely
cause for celebration.
In January, many folks get the urge to take on projects and goals that they
wouldn't typically embark on during the lazy days of summer. There's just
something about the motivation that the very first month of the year can
generate.
Still, it's easy for that motivation to fizzle. Sometimes, in a quest to achieve
something this time of the year (and perhaps the fact that it's too cold or
snowy to do anything outdoors) we choose very involved projects or lofty
goals...and it takes time to work through these and reach the finish line.
That's why it's important to have many finish lines along the way...intervals
where we can stop, breathe, and celebrate what we've done so far. You may be
saying to yourself, 'stopping along the way seems counter-productive.' On the
contrary, it's when we work too hard and too long on something that fatique or
boredom set in, mistakes happen, our brains cease to work in an efficient,
productive manner, or the worse...we get so overwhelmed that production just
stops completely.
My suggestion is this: Rather than waiting until the project or goal is fully
completed, give yourself 'milestones' to reach and enjoy. For example, say you
have an attic full of boxes that you need to go through and organize. This can
be a huge undertaking that can definitely take time to complete. As you walk in
and see box after box, it may seem like the task at hand is insurmountable and
impossible to finish. This is exactly the time to change your mindset.
Set milestones. You first milestone may be to get through just one box today.
Your second may be to get through one more box tomorrow...or next weekend if
you're not in a super-rush to get your project done. Keep setting small
milestones until all of the boxes have been dealt with.
As you complete each milestone (in this case, one box), allow yourself to do
something that you find more enjoyable. The feeling of accomplishment that comes
when parts of jobs get done can be just as satisfying as the feeling you get
when the whole project is seen through to completion. The upside is that by
breaking the project into mini-milestones you will be getting the positive
feelings more frequently.
Remember to celebrate each milestone. It makes your journey to a goal (or
the completion of a project) that much more satisfying.
