Keeping and Recycling Greeting Cards Received

Hi Maria,

Thanks for your views on greetings cards in your Dec 12th issue. Mine are slightly different. Given that, as you say it is nice to get a real card, even though it costs money and takes effort to send. My way is:

1. All cards are opened on day of receipt and displayed right away (even if this is slightly in advance of the occasion).

2. They are displayed for about a month (again in recognition that time and money has been involved in sending it to me).

3. Then they go into a box for a year. I have a box like you, and my rule is that I must not need more than that one box--no overflow.

4. The following year, I recycle either by cutting the card up for gift tags if suitable or in the paper recycling. But I keep a card from anyone who has died since sending it to me so I still have the last cards from elderly relatives and dear friends no longer with me. It's a kind of memento of them.

5. The cards I received for special occasions (eg. my 50th) were memorable, but I disposed of them after my 60th when I had a new set of 'special' cards.

6. I do still have all the 'thinking of you' cards sent to me when my parents died and am unsure when I will dispose of these.

7. Like you, I keep cards that include snippets of family information and the like.

8. Buying cards: I do this whenever visiting a special place, museum or library which often have interesting cards. Sometimes, the card picture is a drawing or painting by a local artist being sold to raise funds. I try to fit the card to the person. This also means I am not sending mass-produced birthday cards.
