Organizing Myself Seems Impossible
A GON Reader Asks:
Hi Maria,
I love your newsletter messages. Each time I try to organize myself, it looks
impossible. I don't know what to do. at what time to do it, or how to go about
doing it...even organizing my thoughts. Please, do you have any recommendations.
I actually need help.

Maria Gracia responds:
Hi Omolola,
Thank you for your question. My thought here is that, when you say you want to
organize yourself, it's important for you to first zone in on ONE aspect of
that. For instance, maybe you want to manage your time better, get your kitchen
organized, declutter your paperwork, gain a better sense of priorities, and have
a more productive schedule. The more you're including in the goal of organizing
yourself, the more overwhelming (and nearly impossible) it's going to be to
achieve.
Anything you organize today...in any form or size...is going to help you be
more organized today than you were yesterday.
So choose very small goals to start that can be easily defined and broken down
into small pieces.
For instance, maybe you're thinking of decluttering your paperwork and maybe
you have a ton. One of your small goals may be to recycle 10 pieces of paper
you no longer need. That's a doable goal and one you can likely picture very
clearly in your mind.
Perhaps you're thinking of managing your time better. One of your small goals
may be to pinpoint one task you're doing that is taking too long...and to work
on a way to streamline the time it takes you to do it. For instance, maybe you're
spending a lot of time putting away stray items in your home. The solution may
be to begin putting items back where they belong immediately, rather than in
temporary holding spaces.
So, in other words, rather than thinking to yourself, 'I have to organize
myself,' think this instead, 'What is one thing I can do today that will ensure
I'm better organized than yesterday?' and then work on that alone before you
move on to something else.
That one thing may even be to make a list of things/areas you'd like to
organize, and then choosing one.
I will warn you to be very careful when you finally determine what your one
thing will be. It really has to be small and doable. A TO DO like 'organize
the kitchen' is too big. It should be something like, 'declutter and sort
the kitchen spices.' When it comes to getting things done and you're feeling
overwhelmed, think small.
I hope this helps get you into a more organized mindset.
