___ 1. A clear and clean work surface: Whether I'm doing paperwork at my
desk or the kitchen table, the work surface I'm at has to be clear and clean.
This means no piles of paper, no magazines, no junk mail, and no paperwork or
file folders pertaining to projects other than the task/project I'm working on
at that very moment. This helps ensure no distractions, little chance of
something getting misplaced, and a more focused mind.
___ 2. Easy-available first aid. It's not fun, when you get a paper cut
or much worse, to have to search for a band aid. Every home should be equipped
with at least one (preferably two if you have a large home) well-stocked first
aid kits, in an easy-to-find place, out of the reach of young children. You can
get pretty elaborate with first aid kits, but here are some very basic items you
should definitely have on hand:
For the person applying first aid:
* disposable sterile gloves (at least 2 pairs)
* antibacterial wipes
* plastic bags (for sanitary disposal)
For cuts and scrapes:
* medium and large sterile gauze dressings (and tape)
* scissors
* tweezers
* band-aids in assorted sizes
* antiseptic spray
* alcohol-free wipes
* distilled water for cleaning wounds
For skin and eye issues:
* skin rash cream
* eye wash and 2 sterile eye dressings
For sprains:
* an ACE bandage with a Velcro closure
* Instant Cold/Hot Packs
For pain and allergic reactions:
* thermometer (preferably digital)
* pain/allergy medicines (Mine always has Motrin and Benadryl)
___ 3. The Board Dudes Cork Board. In my house, having a nice, large
cork board where I can hang paperwork related to upcoming activities and events
is a must. I have this one in my utility room. Right now, it's holding paperwork
for my daughter's lifeguarding classes that are coming up in February, as well
as paperwork about parent/teacher conferences, a trivia night event that my
husband and I are attending, and the slip of paper indicating when our library
books are due back. There is never old information on the cork board (when the
activity or event is over, the paper is recycled). I consider it a 'very
temporary holding place' for dates in the very near future (one month or less.)
This particular cork board is excellent. It's large 22 x 35 inches, has a nice
black frame, and has a self- healing surface (it hides the pin holes after use).
