Why Organization and Happiness Go Hand-in-Hand

Was one of your New Year's resolutions to be more organized in 2019? It's actually one of the biggest new year's resolutions every single year. I guess most folks know, on some level, that being more organized could improve their everyday lives.

Why then, is the whole idea of organizing so daunting for so many? We might hear the word 'organization' and think of the days when every shelf had to pass the white glove test and the kitchen floor had to be clean enough to eat on. But the world has changed, and along with this so have our roles and expectations. Having an immaculately clean house is not the same thing as being organized. In fact, that kind of perfection has a way of making us unhappier.

The good news is that a more organized life does make for a happier life. Less clutter can mean more freedom, less anxiety, fewer household chores, and more time to spend on things and people that mean the most to us. When we invest our time in ways that align with our values, we can't help but feel better about ourselves. After all, a big part of happiness is liking who we are.

Here are even more reasons why organization and happiness go hand in hand:

Less Stress: Excess clutter is stressful, whether we realize it or not. It can make us feel overwhelmed and anxious. It's stressful to be late for work when we can't find our keys. We feel guilty when we miss an important appointment, especially when we neglected to write it down. Losing a key or missing an appointment may seem like small things, but it is so often the little things that take their toll on our well-being. With just a few systems in place and less unnecessary stuff around, we feel more relaxed and able to cope with our busy lives.

Better Relationships: A cluttered, messy house can create tension among the people who share it. With a reasonably clean and more orderly home, we don't need to panic as much when the in-laws make a surprise visit or when one of our neighbors rings the doorbell. We are more apt to say yes to an impromptu lunch with a dear friend or our child's request for 'just one more story,' when we feel organized and we've padded in time for the people, activities, and events that matter most.

More Focus: By freeing up our minds from all the stress and worry, we are better able to do the things that help us take care of ourselves in ways that also contribute to our happiness. We might carve out time for exercise, for instance, and make time for hobbies or activities that replenish rather than drain us.

You don't need a January 1st to get on track. And it doesn't matter if you chose being better organized as a new year's resolution and you've slipped up a bit (or haven't even started.) Every day is a new page...and a new opportunity for better organizing practices and a happy life! Start now. Be happy.
