What Is In Your Life that Isn't Bringing You Joy?
I stopped in a coffee shop this week. On one of the tables near the fireplace,
there was a wooden sign that said, 'Friends will help you up when you fall, but
best friends will push you back down and laugh.' Hmmmmm...I thought to
myself...I know this is supposed to be cute and funny, but it's not really
resonating with me. I wondered, that moment, if others have read that sign and
felt the same way. It didn't exactly give me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.
What do you see or have in your life every day, that doesn't bring you joy,
fails to make you feel good, or even is a constant thorn in your side? Here are
four possible pins you may want to unstick from yourself:
1) Decor that doesn't speak to you. Pick a room...any room. Look around
carefully. Do the knick knacks you've had on the shelf for years still bring up
joyful feelings? Does the artwork you have on the walls still speak to you? Do
you have some decoration in the room that you really don't like now, or never
did? It can be very freeing to donate or trash decorations that you'd rather not
having decorating your life.
2) Negative people and negative posts. I'm a people person. I really
enjoy being around people and getting to know them. Everyone complains once in a
while (including me). Heck, we all need a form of release now and then. However,
I move as far away as I can (in proximity and emotionally) from constant
negativity. I prefer those I choose to spend the most time with (in person and
on social media) to be people who inspire me, share similar values, and make
me happy.
3) Cluttered surroundings. It's very difficult to feel focused,
grounded, or relaxed in an environment that is filled to the max with 'visual
noise.' This is just one of the many reasons why I tidy up every single night,
even if I'm too tired to do so. I prefer beginning my day with a clear desk,
a clean, organized bathroom, an empty email inbox, and a dishwasher that's
unloaded and ready to take on that day's dishes.
4) Social activities that have gotten 'old.' Years ago, I belonged to a
social club that I really enjoyed when I first joined...and then as the years
went by, it was no longer fun for me. In fact, it started to be a chore when the
dates of the social events drew near, and I found myself making excuses not to
attend. That's when I realized that I had to move on. I did, and never looked
back. These days, I belong to an annual scrapbooking retreat group and a monthly
book chat group I really enjoy, and I volunteer for two annual events that are
near and dear to my heart.
Life is short. Part of being organized is sorting out the darkness from the
light. Release anything in your life that casts a shadow, and instead fill your
life to the brim with light...with the people, things, and activities that make
you joyful.
