What to Say to a Friend Who is Battling a Serious Illness

For many people, speaking to someone with a serious illness can be very uncomfortable, frightening, or difficult. It's understandable. You don't want to say the wrong thing. You don't want to upset the person even more...after all, isn't this person suffering enough already?

At the same time, avoiding a friend with a serious illness can be heartbreaking for both you and your friend. It's much better to be strong, supportive, and there for this important person in your life in their time of need.

1) Smile, hug, and greet happily. Greet your friend cheerfully with a simple hug. Say something like, 'It is so good to see you' or 'I've really missed you.'

2) Bring a care package. Bringing someone a gift is a lovely gesture. Include things like a handmade card, comfy socks, a book of inspiration, a scrapbook filled with memorable photos of time you've spent together, a note for them to read later when you're gone--anything you feel this person will enjoy. Say, 'I've been thinking of you and brought you a little something.'

3) Acknowledge your support. Ask, 'how can I help out?' Then offer some ideas up like making meals for his/her family members, taking care of a pet, going grocery shopping, watching the kids once a week, folding some laundry...you get the idea. Anything that would be helpful.

4) If you're unsure, ask. Don't try to guess what your friend wants to talk about. Ask, 'What would you like to chat about today? Do you want to hear a funny story? Do you want to hear about something that happened in work? Would you like to hear about a book I read? Do you want to tell me about something? It's your call. I'm here for you in any way you need me to be.'
