Feeling Way Behind? How to Catch Up
This is the first year I've been living in Wisconsin that my daughter (now a
freshman in high school) had school called off six days, so far, due to icy,
snowy winter weather. Winter has definitely been a challenge this year. School
districts are held accountable, in each state, for meeting a certain number of
instructional minutes each school year. So, while some of those snow days were
'built in' others have to be 'made up.' To do so, many of the upcoming school
days that were supposed to be half-days, are now going to be full days. They
had to find a way to 'catch-up' after falling way behind, and this is a good
solution.
It's very easy for any person to fall behind for one reason or another. Perhaps
an illness put us out-of-commission for a few days, or maybe a vacation caused
TO DOs to pile up? Maybe we have more work than we could actually handle in a
given week...or it's possible we just allowed a bunch of tasks to 'sit' because
we didn't feel like doing them...and now our list is a mile long.
When this happens...
First off, don't beat yourself up. Even the most organized people in the world
fall behind now and then.
Second, take a breath and get everything you have to do on a written (or
printed) list. It doesn't have to be in any particular order. Just jot
everything down so nothing is forgotten.
Third, what can you do to give yourself a bit of extra 'make-up' task-time?
Here are some quick thoughts:
* Wake up earlier than usual and get an early start. I find it's amazing
how much I can get done before my family members are out of bed. It's so quiet
and peaceful in my house during the early morning hours.
* Skip TV and social media. While both of these are fun sources of
entertainment, they can soak up tons of time. So, when you're feeling way
behind, announce a moratorium on these activities (TV, Facebook, Pinterest,
YouTube, etc.) and tackle your TO DO list instead.
* Double up. Every dinner you make this week, make enough for two
meals...one for that night...and one for the freezer. In seven days, you'll have
enough dinners for a full week...already made and ready to re-heat in the oven.
You can use all that saved time to catch up on your tasks.
* Make it a family affair. Some folks live alone and don't have this
option, but if you have other family members living in your house, take off your
'I have to do everything myself' superhero cape, and divvy up some of the tasks.
Remember, many hands make lighter work. And if you do live alone, don't dismiss
the possibility of hiring out some tasks, or getting help from a friend or
relative.
Finally, looking at EVERYTHING you have to do is not only frustrating, but can
be overwhelming too...causing you to come to a stand-still. Instead, focus on
four items on your list at a time, not doing anything else until those four
are completed. And then repeat.
Being behind on your TO DO list isn't the end of the world. With a good attitude
and a little bit of creative thinking, you can make up those 'snow days' and
sail to a new, productive starting point.
