How Do I Get Out of Here?

Have you ever found yourself in one of those situations where you feel trapped? Like being stuck in a group or conversation that makes you uncomfortable, maybe angry, or just plain bored?

This desire to leave can happen pretty much anywhere...at a party, a business meeting, when visiting someone in the hospital, even with friends. Sometimes we have distracting things on our minds. Other times, we merely have no more patience for where we are. Maybe we just need some quiet time alone with ourselves.

So how do we leave? Well, obviously it depends on the situation. Sometimes, like at your niece's wedding, you are simply stuck, with no graceful way out short needing a trip to the emergency room. If you cannot leave, make the best of it. Enjoy the food or entertainment. Find the most interesting person you can to talk to. Pretend you're a novelist needing a character. Do your best to look engaged and not bored.

With other situations, there exist a few (at least semi-gentle ways) of leaving.

At some social gatherings, and even some business meetings (depending on your rank in the group) if you let people know from the start that your time is limited, you may be able to leave more easily. At a meeting, you can say that you have another meeting with a client in an hour and a half, and hope to make this an efficient and productive meeting. At a party, you might gently mention as you arrive that your time is restricted, but you plan to enjoy the party and people as much as possible until your witching hour.

When you get ready to leave, don't dawdle. Don't make excuses for why you are going (they will likely sound like excuses). Say thank you as if you had just attended the best party ever, and call or send a note to your host the next day.

Sometimes you get stuck in a conversation. Someone is holding forth with disagreeable opinions which will never change. Or perhaps it's a chronic complainer. Wait for a break...then make your excuse to grab another taste of that wonderful hummus before it is all gone, give the hostess a hand in the kitchen, etc. Smile at everyone and quickly make your exit. If it is only you and the other person, suggest getting more food, or saying hello to someone across the room.

Visiting someone in a hospital or nursing home makes many of us uncomfortable, especially if they may not improve. While friends or relatives may be difficult to see in their current state, remember back to who they always were, what made you close. Reminisce about good memories. In less serious circumstances, just keep the conversation pleasant. You don't have to stay long, observe you don't want to tire them out. Add you will be back again, but only if you really will.

Of course, other, more serious circumstances arise where we want to leave. But for the average 'I wish I were somewhere else' feeling that overtakes us in some situations, perhaps these tips will be helpful. You may have others you can share that have worked well for you, and I would love to hear them.
