  Ask Maria

Should I Keep Movie Stubs, Playbills, and Other Memorabilia?

A GON Reader Asks:

Dear Maria,

Do you have any past articles on dealing with movie stubs and other entertainment memorabilia? I'm on the fence about disposing of them, but I'm trying to declutter and simplify my life. So far I've scanned them, but have not thrown away the hard copies as I am conflicted.

This fabulous GON reader 'Ask Maria' question was submitted by:

Maria Gracia responds:

Hi Maria,

Thanks so much for your question. This is a tough one to answer for any individual because what's important to one person may not mean anything to another.

Personally and in general, I don't keep movie ticket stubs, playbills, most sporting event tickets, entry tickets to zoos and museums, and other entertainment memorabilia. Probably the only time I would is if I went to something truly spectacular...like the Olympics or the Superbowl.

I am a scrapbooker, so occasionally I will keep tickets or a show program to an event my daughter was in to add to my scrapbook. (Note to other scrapbookers: If it's not acid-free, I often take a photo of the memorabilia and include a photo of it on my layouts, versus the original.)

I know somebody who has actually held onto movie ticket stubs her whole life and has them beautifully documented in several photo albums that she displays in her family room.

I know somebody else who keeps a diary of all movies and events she attends. While she doesn't keep the actual stubs or programs, she has a listing if she ever wants to refer to it.

So, this question is really a matter of personal preference. You'll need to ask yourself if you'd like to keep this sort of memento in your home, and exactly why. Is this something you'd like to showcase to family and friends? Is it something that would trouble you if you simply recycled it all? Do you have the storage space necessary to keep all of it? How often do you actually sit down with a cup of tea and look through these items? Are you interested in framing your favorites and parting with the rest? Are you crafty and would you create something out of these, like a back drop on a glass coffee table or tray?

As a final note, the fact alone that you're asking the question is a good sign you're ready to part with them, but you'll have to make the final decision here regarding what's taking up prime real estate and whether or not those items are worth that space.

Hope this helps gets you thinking about whether to keep or toss.

Maria
