Searching the Internet...Which Device and How Much Time

I recently polled GON readers on my web site: When you are searching the Internet for information, which device (desktop computer, laptop, smart phone, or tablet) are you using? Here are the results:

37% Desktop Computer
31% Laptop
18% Smart Phone
14% Tablet

Personally, if I'm seeking quick information (like what movies are playing in my area or the score of a baseball game), I'll 'voice command' the question into my phone and allow Siri to answer. This saves me typing time...and time spent correcting the auto-correct of my typing.

If I'm seeking more detailed information though, that I know is going to require information from many web sites, I find it much easier to use my desktop or laptop computer.

It's actually amazing how quickly we can get information we need these days. I still remember walking 15 minutes to the local library in Jersey City, NJ, and plowing through card catalogs and encyclopedias for hours. That was until my parents decided to buy their very own set of the Encyclopedia Britannica for our family to use at home. This saved on the walking time, but still took time investment to find the information...never mind the storage space needed for all the volumes!

And remember those word problems that we had to figure out with pencil and paper (using our brains or maybe a calculator)? These days, we can ask 'Siri or Alexa' 'What is the square root of 155 divided by 52?' and he/she happily responds in seconds without breaking a sweat. The answer is 1.72649 if you were wondering.

As far as my tablet, I mostly use my iPad to read magazines. No more paper magazines for me...I use a service called Texture...which gives me unlimited access to current and past issues of all my favorites. If you're hoping to cut down on paper clutter and not have to lug the weight of three or four magazines around, this is the way to go.

Of course, all that time saved could be drained quickly if you find yourself getting distracted by everything technology has to offer. You can easily set out to find a recipe for apple pie and get lured into the other million recipes begging for your attention. You could be searching for information on natural dog food, and get enticed into an adorable puppies video instead. So, being aware of your time and original searching goals is key to saving time with technology versus the opposite.

For a future issue of this newsletter, I'd love to hear your own, personal time-saving tips for using any of the devices in my original poll above, so reply with those and I'll publish those reader tips in upcoming future issues. When you do, please include your name, city, state, and anything fun about you that you'd like me to include when I publish your tip/idea.
