Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week - Day 7
|
It's 'Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week': Day 7
This week, we've been focusing on getting rid of paper clutter. Today is Day
7... the last day of this series. If you missed our tips from Days 1 through 6,
you can access them on these links:
Day 1 - Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week
Day 2 - Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week
Day 3 - Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week
Day 4 - Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week
Day 5 - Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week
Day 6 - Get Rid of Paper Clutter Week
Here is our continuation from yesterday...
19. Be careful about turning into an 'infomaniac.' If you're like me,
you're interested in a lot of things. This can be really good if you're learning
every day...but really bad if everything you read gets clipped and filed
somewhere. Infomaniac tendencies can result in a ton of paper clutter. I have
two rules: a) If I can easily find it online later, I don't clip it and b) If I
know it might be tough finding it later, I scan it or jot a note about it and
save it in an online program called Evernote. This way, I don't need to store
the information on paper, but I can access it any time I need it.
20. Don't be held captive by old notes, college essays and the like. Last
year, when my daughter completed the school year, she took five binders-worth of
paper, and with a huge smile on her face, emptied every last sheet into the
recycle bin. It was kind of funny...and gratifying too. I certainly don't want
her buried under piles of paper for each school year she completes. You might be
saying, 'I worked hard on those essays', or 'I spent thousands of dollars on my
college education,' or 'those papers and notebooks represent all my years of
hard work.' Any of these statements can easily result in massive amounts of
paper that you'll likely never look at again and is taking up a ton of
unnecessary space. Hold onto the knowledge and pride...recycle the physical
paper.
21. Get your 'keepers' into a good filing system. Once you're done
weeding out all those papers that you don't need to retain, be sure you store
the keepers in a good filing system...one that's categorized properly and allows
you to quickly retrieve what you're looking for, in seconds, without any kind of
stress. Start with major categories...and then file each sub-category
alphabetically behind the major ones.
And, by the way, if you've been hoping and praying for a way to organize your
paper once and for all, and get it into a beautifully organized filing system
that allows you to find what you need in 10 seconds or less...then you've got to
