Wait...Don't Toss Those Old Toothbrushes Just Yet
A GON Reader Asks:
Hi Maria,
My cleaning lady, who comes only once a month for a few hours, likes to use, and
occasionally I do too, an old toothbrush to clean 'hard to get to' areas. My
concern is hygiene. How do I get a toothbrush that's been in someone's mouth
germ free? Once I tried soaking it in warm water and all the bristles came out.
Help! For wider objects, I've been using a bottle brush successfully. Thank you!

Maria Gracia responds:
Hi Sharon,
Thanks for your question.
You mentioned the bristles were falling out of an old toothbrush after soaking
it. That's likely because the toothbrush was very old. Toothbrushes you're using
for cleaning your teeth should be swapped out every two months.
Most old toothbrushes that aren't way past their prime can be sanitized by
popping them in the dishwasher. Just place them in the utensil compartment and
when your dishwasher is full, run the cycle. Then, they're ready to be used for
your cleaning jobs...and only cleaning jobs after that point.
Here are some uses for old toothbrushes:
* Clean the grout in your kitchen or bathroom.
* Apply hair dye.
* Get between the keys of your computer keyboard to clean them.
* Scrub a hair comb.
* Clean window tracks.
* Brush away dirt and pebbles stuck in the bottoms of shoes.
* Clean jewelry, but not pearls.
* Scrub fingernails. Or clean your pet's nails and paws.
* Clean a bicycle chain.
* Exfoliate chapped lips.
Hope I provided some useful ideas.
