It's Not All a Priority...
And Why Thinking it All is
Often Results in Nothing Getting Done

We all have priority tasks in our lives...like paying our bills, cleaning our homes, getting projects done in work, cooking meals for our families, getting our kids to sports practices, and having coffee with friends. What's a priority to one person, may be low on the totem pole to another. Still, priorities are important for everyone...they give us personal direction and propel us towards what's most important in our lives.

But what if, instead of pushing us forward, what we deem to be our priority tasks are holding us back? What if we prioritize too much...and instead of helping us get things done, we are actually accomplishing less than we could be?

When we have a TO DO list, be it a physical list or merely a mental list, it's normal to place the things we want to get done in a specific order. We make a list and put what we view as priorities at the top and those items considered less urgent at the end. This seems like a logical way to get through life.

The problem is, we can sometimes get in the mindset that EVERYTHING is super- important, resulting in us creating a never-ending list of TO DOs that seems overwhelming and impossible to complete.

A TO DO list that you feel will never be seen through to completion can easily become a list that never gets addressed at all. (Re-read this sentence...it's extremely important.)

Consider a different approach. Continue with your list-making. After all, having a visual of things that need to get done and then crossing them off as they get completed is a great way to see that things are actually getting done. This long list is called a Master List...a holding place for EVERYTHING you need to do.

BUT, this time, make a list for TODAY that only includes ONE priority. Fill the rest of the list with smaller, less-pressing jobs that you can quickly and/or easily complete.

For example, if you need to get a room in your home painted, don't put that on the same daily TO DO list as refinishing a piece of furniture that you've been wanting to get done. These are two rather big jobs that, when put one after the other on a list, can seem (and usually are) impossible to complete on the same day.

Instead, choose ONE of those things and put it on today's list with smaller jobs, such as weeding out a drawer or cleaning the mirrors in the bathrooms. Work on your priority first (either start to finish) or handling a chunk of it. Then, get the smaller stuff done. Tomorrow, you can either choose another big priority if you completed your original one...or stick with yesterday's priority item...and work on that one priority daily until it's done.

Using this method will help ensure that you're working on a priority item AND other smaller tasks are getting completed as well, giving you a feeling of accomplishment that you otherwise would be missing by having all of the big projects staring back at you, yet never getting done.
