We respect your time.
This newsletter will take 5:00 minutes to read.
On the contrary, Kermit, it's easy being green!
Whenever I think of green, Kermit the Frog pops into my mind. I'm not sure why
this is. AND when I think of Kermit the Frog, his 'It's Not Easy Bein' Green'
song begins playing in my mind. Do you remember it? If you're feeling nostalgic
now, here's the link to the YouTube video:
It's Not Easy Being Green song
The ending to the song hits me every time...
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why
But, why wonder? (why wonder?)
I'm green and it'll do fine
It's beautiful. And I think it's what I want to be.
We can all aim to be green...in the sense of being happy and proud of who we
are.
We can ALSO aim to be green in the more modern meaning of the word... respecting
where we live. There are a number of ways we can do this, but in a nutshell,
being green is about using our resources without wasting them and being careful
not to damage our environment.
Today is Earth Day...and it's the perfect day to 'go green' so to speak...or,
at least, to 'go green-er.'
According to the organization, Conserve Energy Future, 'Earth Day brings
attention to a large number of issues in requirement of attention, such as
pollution of the ocean, debris left over on land, climate change, conservation
of the Earth's ecosystems, energy conservation, soil corruption, corrosion,
overpopulation, nuclear issues, the depletion of the ozone layer, the depletion
of the Earth's natural resources, and the introduction of wastes and toxicants
into the wilderness and the seas.'
To us individuals, that probably seems like a pretty tall order. But if each and
every person started doing things in a more 'green' manner, we'd ALL be better
off for every tomorrow to follow.
Here are 7 ways to 'go green' starting on Earth Day (not counting recycling
which most of us are probably already doing) and continuing forward:
1) Before throwing something away, determine if it can be repurposed. If
you're not the creative or crafty type, donate it. There's a very good chance
someone else can use whatever it is.
2) Wash laundry in cold water. Unless you have a really good reason for
washing in warm or hot (super stinky clothes, cloth diapers, a stain that won't
come out, someone at home has the flu), wash in cold. It saves energy, you'll
save on your electric bill, and your clothes will last longer. Except for a few
instances when I needed to wash in hot or warm over the years, my laundry is all
cold-wash and it comes perfectly clean and fresh.
3) Turn off lights when you leave the room. Enough said.
4) Go as paperless as possible. Receive and pay your bills online. Don't
print more than you have to. Opt for digital newsletters and reports. Doing so
helps cut down on deforestation and pollution AND helps cut down on your own
paper clutter as well.
5) Next time you buy an appliance, look for an 'Energy Star' label. This
indicates that what you're buying meets strict energy efficiency criteria set by
the US Environmental Protection Agency or the US Department of Energy. Energy
Star appliances use less energy and produce fewer harmful emissions. Plus, as a
bonus, they save you money.
6) Fix leaky faucets. Do it yourself or call in a plumber. You may
even get a better night's sleep. Nobody wants to hear drip, drip, drip...
7) Make your own household cleaner. Here's one of my favorite recipes for
a great-smelling, all-purpose cleaner for the bathroom and kitchen: Put the
following in a spray bottle: one part white vinegar, one part water, some lemon
rind, and a few rosemary sprigs. Shake. Allow to infuse for five days. That's
it! I always have two bottles on hand, so when one is done, the other is ready
to go. (Note: I use this for the bathtub, sinks, vinyl floors and such. I don't
use it to clean wood.)
Have a very happy earth day...and, like Kermit, 'go green!'
