____ 1. Using methods to remember someone's name. People feel special when called by name. The more people you know or if you don't see them often, however, could make recalling those names more challenging. To help combat this, I associate that person with a picture in my mind. For instance, at the gym, there is a lovely lady who comes to one of my fitness classes who has a distinct haircut...her hair is shaved very short near her ears. Her name is Katie. I so happen to know a hairdresser named Katie...so when I see Katie from the gym, I immediately think of my hairdresser friend...and my mind associates one Katie with another. You can also associate people and their names with movie stars, or sports heroes, etc. When introduced to someone, I try to use their name three times in that first conversation. For instance, 'Good Morning, Francine, it's nice to meet you.' Then, a bit later, 'Francine, what hobbies are you most interested in?' And at the end of the conversation, 'It was wonderful meeting you, Francine.' This helps 'cement' Francine's name in my mind. Finally, I use a notes app in my phone. The note is titled, 'Names.' When I learn someone's name, I get it into the app, along with his/her spouse's name, etc. I then jot a note about where I know this person from and what they look like (curly hair, brown eyes, about 5 foot, 10 inches. Of course, if I run into them, I can't really whip my phone out then and there, but I can reference it later for next time. Finally, don't be embarrassed to ask a person's name a second or third time if needed. You might say, 'I seem to be having a temporary memory lapse (or I have to ask a name three times before it sticks)...would you be a dear and remind me of your name?'

____ 2. Remembering special moms on Mother's Day. Mother's Day is approaching...May 12th to be exact. Don't forget the special moms and grandmas in your life...your mom, your mother-in-law...even moms you know who aren't related to you, but who hold a special place in your heart. Write down those names and pick up a few Mother's Day cards for each of them. If you shop at a dollar-type store, you can get those for $1 each. Then, mail them or give them personally. And if you give gifts for Mother's Day, now is the time to finalize those. By the way, 'experience gifts' (like movie tickets, restaurant gift cards, spa treatments) and 'consumable gifts' (gifts that get 'used up' like fruit basket, flowers) are almost always appreciated and don't cause possible clutter for your recipient.

____ 3. Being savvy with my finances. I've been a fan of Gary Foreman's web site, The Dollar Stretcher www.stretcher.com?gon for years. He has been providing excellent frugal living advice since 1996. His company has recently launched www.After50Finances.com?gon to explore the financial issues that readers aged 50 and older face...not only for themselves, but also for their aging parents. It includes everything from lifestyle choices to estate planning decisions. I highly encourage you to check it out. Along with the website, there's a free weekly newsletter.
