  Ask Maria

I Have a Pet Hair Dilemma

A GON Reader Asks:

Hi Maria,

A good friend of mine is gravely ill, and I've been asked to take care of her dog for the long-term, which I don't mind at all. I love my friend and her dog is well-behaved and so fun to have around. But I don't own pets of my own, and now I have dog hair everywhere. What is the best way to keep it under control?

This fabulous GON reader 'Ask Maria' question was submitted by:

Maria Gracia responds:

Hi Gareth,

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. I'm sure you taking in her dog is of great comfort to her.

The best way to keep the hair under control is to brush the dog every single day, outside or in the garage if possible. Even a daily 2-minute brushing will save you tons of time later.

In addition:

Give the dog a bath every few months with a gentle oatmeal shampoo. This will help keep the dog's fur healthy.

Keep the dog on a healthy diet with plenty of digestible proteins. This will help ensure a healthy coat as well.

Keep the dog out of certain areas. For instance, if you don't want dog hair in your bedroom, keep the bedroom door closed so the dog doesn't have access.

Cover fabric furniture with a throw. Take the throw outside and shake it out a few times a week. Launder it once a week. Otherwise, to remove pet hair from a fabric sofa, use a damp rubber glove. Rub the glove over it until the glove is full of hair. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Slightly dampened dryer sheets pick up pet hair nicely as well, so be sure to always have a few boxes on hand.

In my house, we have a white bunny that sheds a few times a year. When this is happening, I've noticed his white fur on my black appliances, like my stovetop. When this is the case, I wipe down the counters and cooking area with a damp cloth any time I'm ready to prepare food.

For hard floors, a damp (not soaking) mop can quickly remove pet fur. If you're in a rush, a rubber broom can quickly catch loose pet hair.

Vacuum rugs in rooms where the pet is daily. Make two passes, being sure to alternate directions to ensure you're getting it all up. Also, change your vacuum bag often and check the filters.

We are never without lint rollers in my house to help ensure we're not walking out the door covered in pet fur.

I hope you find some of these ideas helpful.

Maria

Brain Training for Dogs

Is the Secret to Making
Your Dog's Problem Behaviors Disappear

No matter what your dog's problem behavior is, be it jumping, peeing inappropriately, nipping, aggression, pulling on the leash...or whatever, there is ONE SOLUTION that can help STOP this problem now.

The sad fact is, most dog trainers miss this solution entirely. They give you cookie-cutting training programs. They use outdated and 'mean' dominance techniques. Or worse yet, they have no qualifications and are complete phonies. So what's the answer to stopping your dog's behavior problems? In 5 simple words...

Discovering your dog's hidden intelligence.

Let me explain. More intelligent dogs are better behaved. A more intelligent dog takes commands easier and understands what you need from them. The good news is, no matter how clever you think your dog is, you can unlock his/her hidden intelligence quickly and easily.

Don't waste a second longer coping with problem behaviors you don't need to be dealing with. Visit this link to learn more about Brain Training for Dogs:
