Motivation and Commitment...They Go Hand-in-Hand
As I looked out my window yesterday, I noticed the ornamental grass in our yard
beginning to spring up. This means our hydrangeas will begin to return as well.
My husband, Joe, and I haven't had a chance to cut back what was left over from
last year. I guess I know what we'll be doing this weekend. This task is not
something that either of us really wants to do, but our motivation is coming
from the fact that if we don't get it done soon, the task is going to be much
harder later. Cutting back the old growth that will be intertwined with the new
growth won't be fun, so we're 'motivated' to get out there this weekend.
Sometimes motivation equals, 'I'm happy and so excited to do it'...whatever that
may be. On the other hand, it can also mean 'I'm not happy about doing it, but
other reasons are pushing me to get it done.'
The level of your motivation is derived from your commitment.
A) HIGH Commitment: 'I'm going to do this because I REALLY WANT TO...and
I'm excited about the process to get it done.' The motivation is already within
you.
Every spring, Dawn sets a date on her calendar to spring-clean her kitchen.
She loves doing so because it gives her home a fresh feel and provides her with
an amazing sense of accomplishment. She's at a category A commitment level.
B) MEDIUM Commitment-Positive: 'I'm going to do this because I REALLY
WANT IT DONE, even though I don't want to do what it takes to get it done. But
I'll suck it up and do it anyway because it will result in something POSITIVE.'
(It will make you feel good, it will give you a greater sense of worth, it will
help you earn a higher salary, and so on.)
Bob has to create a resume for a job he just saw listed. He'd rather just
interview in person, and hates the fact that now he has to spend time all
weekend creating a resume. That being said, Bob decided to 'put the pedal to the
medal' and get it done. He wants that job really bad. This falls into (B) Medium
Commitment-Positive.
C) MEDIUM Commitment-Negative: 'I'm going to do this because I REALLY
WANT IT DONE, even though I don't want to do what it takes to get it done. But
I'll suck it up anyway because not doing it will likely result in something
NEGATIVE.' (It will cause you to accrue unnecessary interest, it will take even
more time and energy to get it done later, it will damage a relationship, etc.)
Karen, has been dreading decluttering her house. She would much rather be
doing something else. However, she is downsizing to another house in 4 weeks,
and has run out of procrastination time. She knows if she doesn't get it done,
she'll have to pay the moving company more...to move more things...that she will
not have the space for in her new home...which is not an option with her new
home or current budget. This falls into (C) Medium Commitment-Negative.
D) LOW Commitment: 'I'm going to wait for the inspiration to strike
because I KINDA, SORTA, MAYBE want to get it done, when I have some extra time.'
Gina thinks it would be nice to get her old photos organized and into albums
someday. But she has a long list of other TO DOs and this one just isn't high
priority to her at this time. It has been on her TO DO list for nearly a year.
This is (D) Low Commitment....also known as the 'fuzzy, probably ain't gonna get
done anytime soon...if at all' category.
If whatever you want/have to do falls in category A, you're well on your way to
starting it and accomplishing it.
If whatever you want/have to do falls into category B or C, some extra
'motivational boosters' can help you get these done AND help to keep you happy
and energized along the way. Here are 5 of my favorite motivational boosters to
help you get started and continue with whatever it takes to get you to the end
result:
1) Make it more pleasant. Play music while you're doing it. Partner up
with someone to help. Do it in a nicer, less cluttered place. Get it done
outside in the fresh air.
2) Set pending rewards. Make something you enjoy (like relaxing in the
yard, playing golf, or watching a movie) contingent upon getting your mini goals
and major goals of your project accomplished. A mini goal equals a mini reward;
a major goal equals a major reward.)
3) Find a cheerleader. Most humans need the support of other people. Ask
a spouse or good friend to cheer you on along the way. Garner some support from
your Facebook tribe.
4) Chop it up into smaller pieces. There's nothing that causes a
motivation dip more than focusing on EVERYTHING it takes to get something done.
Break it up into small pieces you can tackle one by one.
5) Keep your eyes on the prize. Focus on the end result...not the
process.
If whatever you have to do falls into category D, pretty much there are only two
things you can do:
1) Admit to yourself that this task or project isn't really something that
should be on your TO DO list. After all, if you REALLY wanted to get it done,
you'd find a way and the time to do it...or you'd find the money to hire someone
to handle it for you.
OR
2) Commit to whatever it is fully, which actually means you'd be in category A,
B, or C...not D, at that point.
What's on your TO DO list? What's your commitment level for each of those items?
If your commitment level is low, the chances of you completing or succeeding
with whatever it is is low. If your commitment is high, the chances of you
completing it are almost a sure-thing and you'll be happy along the way. If
your commitment is medium-positive or medium negative, you'll likely get it
done too...but use those motivation boosters. They make a huge difference!
