Getting Organized by Making Connections
Humans are social creatures. We live together, work together, eat together,
laugh together, and cry together. But very often when it comes to our TO DO
lists, we tend to try to tackle them alone. This can be counter-productive.
Being connected with people has many benefits, one of which is helping us to be
better organized and more productive in our day-to-day lives. Here are a few
examples:
1) Share the ride: If you have school-age kids, you likely spend a lot of
your time offering an unpaid taxi service. (Well, I'm sure you're being paid in
hugs, right?!) I'm constantly shuttling my teenage daughter to school, events,
sleepovers, and her part-time jobs. While her getting her driver's license soon
is somewhat scary, it's also making me wonder what I'm going to do with all my
free time once she's driving on her own! In the meantime, I do have some
arrangements with other parents to share some of the driving. We carpool
whenever we can...which saves time, gas, and sanity. Even if you don't have kids
living at home, can you carpool for other daily activities...like carpooling
with others who work in the same company...or work out in the same gym?
2) Trade talents. I have a friend who is a whiz at painting walls. She is
able to do the trim work flawlessly whereas I tend to struggle. On the other
hand, she's not easily able to organize her home's spaces, but one of my strong
points is being able to look at a space and immediately seeing a few different
ways to organize it. So what do we do? We trade our talents with each other. She
helps me when I have a painting job to do and I help her when something in her
home needs to be organized. We find our jobs tend to get done more quickly when
we work together...and at the same time, doing the work is much more fun.
3) Join online groups: A friend of mine used to frequently host and
attend garage sales. Those days for her are now gone since she has connected
with online garage sale groups. Connecting with these groups has allowed her to
post items she wishes to sell...and allows her to shop for items she may be in
the market for...without ever having to leave her home. A neighbor of mine is
not good at math...but her daughter desperately needs help with her math
lessons. Instead of my neighbor trying to tackle this on her own, she has joined
an online group that helps her, help her child with math challenges. Yes, such a
thing actually exists. In fact, there are likely social media groups for most
things you need help with...home improvement projects, gardening, and more.
4) Find a support buddy. Sometimes we all need a little help to get
motivated to do whatever it is we know we want to do...but need a little push
initially and/or along the way. Find a friend willing to hold you
accountable...someone who will ask you where you're at, encourage you to keep
going, and recognize/congratulate you for your accomplishments.
I'd love to hear how you've made connections that are helping you to be more
organized and productive. Reply and let me know...and I'll get your responses
in a future edition.
