Lighten Up...Your House, Your Body, Your Mind, Your Life

Do you ever have a week that just feels 'heavy'? Maybe you have a very long TO DO list to complete. Perhaps your boss is asking you to get something done in an unreasonable amount of time. Maybe you have a family member coming to visit for the weekend and you can't imagine when you'll have time to declutter the guest room or clean the bathroom. Perhaps someone you know passed away, or is ill, or maybe you're feeling under the weather. Sometimes there's an unexpected bill for an auto repair or a household appliance. Those types of weeks just seem heavy...like you're carrying a sack of rocks on your back.

It seems that when weeks like this happen, there's not just one 'rock' weighing you down, but rather many. This would be, therefore, a good time to think 'light'... light in the sense of lightening your load physically and emotionally...and light as in 'light at the end of the tunnel' even though that particular light may seem dim at the moment.

Here are some quick ways to lighten up:

1) Use the 10 out method. One way to lighten up the clutter in your home, give your surroundings a cleaner appearance, help others, AND do something that makes you feel 'in control' is getting rid of things you don't need. Grab a box or bag, walk into a room, and place 10 items in it for donation. Do this daily for 7 days...and then drop that box off at a local charity. That means 70 items gone that you really didn't need...something to help you end the week feeling lighter and brighter.

2) Use the sandwich system. Not the type you actually eat...although eating properly and taking care of yourself during a heavy week is a good idea. But, in this case, I mean sandwiching tasks and celebrations. So often, we save up our celebration time for major events, like birthdays or anniversaries. But what if we filled our life daily with celebrations? Now, I'm not talking big, expensive parties, but rather small rewards that help us rejuvenate and reenergize...like giving ourselves 10 minutes to go outside, close our eyes and feel the sunshine, or allowing ourselves an hour to watch some TV or YouTube videos. Today, write down 25 non-monetary or very low cost ideas...rewards you can easily do without any preparation and that range from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. Then, sandwich tasks and rewards throughout your day. You set the rules. I'll often do 30-45 minutes worth of work for my business or household chores...and then enjoy a 10-15 minute reward. Sometimes, if I'm into my 'work/task groove' and notice I just worked 2 hours straight...I'll give myself a 30 minute reward to celebrate my accomplishments.

3) Don't make your load heavier. If you have a relative coming to visit, do you really need to declutter the garage, clean under your refrigerator, make a huge elaborate meal, or plan full days of entertainment? I you have a surgery coming up, do you really need to fill your schedule the week before to the max with dental appointments, volunteer projects, and getting the deck painted? Sometimes, we impose our own 'heaviness' upon ourselves. Relax...most household tasks and work projects we have to do are not 'emergencies.'

4) Allow yourself time to breathe and release. It's very easy to feel emotionally drained sometimes. Very often, this is because no matter how much we do, there's nothing that can actually fix the situation. We allow the fact that we're 'feeling bad,' 'feeling sad', 'feeling guilty', or 'feeling angry' to be the heaviest rocks in our bags. This is when it's time to give yourself permission to breathe and release...most of all on those days when you feel there's not a moment to do so. Go to a Yoga class, head out for a quiet walk, go to the library...find yourself a quiet nook...and read a book, drive over to a coffee shop and people watch, or get together with or call someone who always has a story that makes you smile.

5) Eat lighter and get moving. When there are a lot of heavy things going on in our lives, eating heavy meals, sugary treats, and spending most of the day sitting is going to do nothing more than make us feel more weighed down. Be sure the majority of your meal plates are bursting with colorful, fresh vegetables and fruits, and small amounts of lean protein. Make sure every morsel you put in your mouth is nutritious and makes you feel like you're doing something really good for yourself. Make water your drink of choice...spruce it up with slices of cucumber or fresh citrus fruits. And don't just sit there....get moving. Swim, walk, jog, play tennis, go bowling, play golf...these are all good activities for your mind, body, and spirit.
