  Fabulous Reader Tips

Bill Paying Tip

Hi Maria, I do my bill-paying just as you described in your March 1st newsletter, except instead of the sticky note, I use a yellow highlighter for the Due Date and Amount. It's just as visible, but doesn't waste paper (or trees!). And I can choose the date the payment goes out. So if I'm paying by credit card, I can pay just after the latest bill has been sent, and I then have almost two months before I have to pay. If paying from my checking account, I can wait until my deposits have come in. Thanks for all your ideas!

Note from Maria Gracia: Hi Barbara, Thanks for writing and great points! The reason I use a larger sticky note and a thick marker to write the due date, rather than highlighting, is because my eyesight is not as good as it once was. I don't need my 1.25 strength cheater glasses to see my computer screen, but I do need them now and then for small type which is often the case with bills. I don't normally work with my cheater glasses on because most of the time, I don't need to. So, having the due date large and visible at a glance, without having to reach for my glasses, works for me. That being said, I'm glad you mentioned your tip because that system can work just as well for anyone who can easily see the due date and is a great, paper-saving alternate method!

Identifying Fridge and Freezer Items

I keep a roll of masking tape and a Sharpie in my kitchen drawer to label containers of leftovers, package expiration dates, etc. of items stored in my fridge and freezer. I buy the masking tape very inexpensively at Dollar Tree. Once something is labeled, it peels right off when I want it off and I've never had any residue adhesive to deal with.
