In Response to Guest Room Now Storage Room Due to Medical Situation
In response to my
May 22
newsletter issue, here is some reader mail I received:
Hi Maria,
I'm sitting here hoping that her husband's surgery went well, and his recovery
is progressing. Mine is facing a hip replacement as soon as we can lower his A1C
to the surgeon's requirements. I took note that she had moved to smaller clear
tubs, I did the same last year with my Christmas decorations as the big tubs
were getting to be too much to deal with.
My second bedroom is divided into quarters...one for my 'office,' (a desk,
computer, printer, and that blasted file cabinet, that I actually finished!),
one quarter for the treadmill, one quarter with the west facing window that has
blanket-covered tubs that the cats adore, and the last quarter is for my laundry
accessories (hampers, drying rack, stand steamer, etc.) I got tired of all of
that being in my bedroom, so I moved it in here...closer to the kitchen where
the washer/dryer closet is anyway.
True, it discourages company, but it works. The younger people don't mind the
cushy recliners in the living room if they need a place, and our contemporaries
prefer the privacy of a hotel, and usually need to be closer to the airport or
seaport. Thanks for your help.

Hi Maria,
I feel for this lady's dilemma. In a major medical situation, you have to do
whatever makes you and the family the most comfortable. In addition, I have
moved many times. My first rule always has been to pack in boxes I am able to
lift. I used to use the larger plastic bins, but even those can get heavy. After
a few moves, I finally settled on the Banker Box cardboard box (or similar
brand) as the ideal size. Even when filled with books, I could lift it with
little trouble.
The reasons I like these are 1) they're fairly sturdy, 2) they have lids, and 3)
they have holes on the sides for grabbing. They also are easy to mark and stack
fairly well. I've had some for several years that are still good. They are
better than boxes from stores and easy to recycle. Plastic is not.
Of course, you have to do what's best for your situation and the people who are
helping you move, whether family and friends or professionals. I've done both
and they both take a lot of work, but if you get a head start on packing and
trust the folks moving you, it can be an invigorating and massive decluttering
time. Blessings.
