Today is a Good Day, for a Good Day
What is YOUR idea of a 'great' day? I asked three different people this question
today. One said, 'Waking up to discover I had the winning ticket to last night's
lottery drawing.' Another said, 'Getting an unexpected promotion at work.' The
third said, 'Any day I'm on vacation is a great day.'
Many people would agree that their wedding day, the birth of their child, their
son or daughter graduating, or the day they picked up a brand new puppy were
GREAT days as well.
But every day can't be GREAT. The odds of winning the lottery are pretty slim,
vacations can only be taken now and then, and how many puppies can we
realistically adopt?
That's why shooting for having a GOOD day is a lot more accessible to achieve on
a daily basis. When you focus on the accumulation of all the little things that
matter, you have the opportunity to have at least a GOOD DAY every single day.
The other day, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping, rather than my blaring
alarm clock. Waking up without an alarm, for me, is always cause for
celebration. With as busy as life gets, it's normal to have to set an alarm to
make sure that we can get to where we need to be on time. Those days I don't
have to set an alarm are nice ones.
The days I can slowly sip my steamy cup of coffee from my favorite ceramic mug,
and scroll through my Facebook feed, or read a chapter from a novel, or just
listen to the falling rain, even if for only 15 minutes,..are all deposits in my
GOOD DAY account.
While it would be great to be on vacation, I truly enjoy the days when I'm simply
able to meet up with a friend for lunch and spend an hour catching up. Top that
off with having a meal that I didn't have to prepare and no dishes to clean up
afterwards and I am flying high. A few hours spent with a friend always refuels
my jets and having a meal prepared for me and delivered to my table is always
something that I appreciate.
Sometimes, one thing goes awry (maybe you ended up with a flat tire on the way
to work or your child's soccer practice overran and you ended up late for an
appointment). When this occurs, it's easy to forget about all the good things
and focus on that one dark cloud.
One exercise I like to do, to help ensure that every day is a GOOD DAY at
minimum, is to write good things I noticed throughout the day that made me
happy, always trying to come up with at least a dozen daily. This may seem
challenging at first, but gets easier the more you do it because, in doing
so, your mind 'gets trained' to look for the good.
Here's the dozen I came up with in one day:
1. After many consecutive days of rain, I woke up to sunshine.
2. The bell pepper plants I arranged in containers are flowering.
3. Someone brought fresh flowers to the front desk of the YMCA today. Their
lovely fragrance filled the entire first floor.
4. I was able to take 20 uninterrupted minutes to enjoy a fresh-brewed iced tea
on my deck.
5. The barley soup recipe I found on Pinterest turned out great. I added it to
our regular family recipes binder.
6. I accomplished all of my priority tasks for the day, and was able to
get a few of them done before deadline.
7. I managed to get the very first spot in the grocery store parking lot. Score!
8. No bills arrived in the mail today.
9. One of my friends, who just went through a major surgery, texted me to
say she is feeling much better today. I felt so relieved.
10. A friend sent an email that made me smile. Nothing super special, but she's
always sweet and funny.
11. My daughter passed all of her required lifeguarding tests.
12. I thought of a new business idea that I was able to begin implementing. I'm
excited about it.
Focus on the little things in life that make you happy. Make a list like this, a
dozen items a day. It's really an amazing motivational tool. Every morning, wake
up and say to yourself, 'Today is a good day, for a good day.' Then, really
celebrate those GREAT days, but savor the many GOOD ones as well.
