Is Perfection Holding You Back?
What exactly does perfection mean? Perfectionism has taken on a positive spin in
recent years, often viewed as a positive trait rather than a flaw...a trait that
could increase your chances of success. One might even proudly say, 'I can be a
bit of a perfectionist.'
At its core, perfectionism is a personality trait that involves constantly
striving for the best, maintaining high or even excessive standards, and a
refusal to accept anything below these standards. It can push people to do their
best and to strive for maximum performance. On the surface, that sounds pretty
good.
Perfectionism, however, has a dark side and there are many hazards of
this personality trait.
What makes perfection toxic is its focus not on success but rather on avoiding
failure. It can lead people to be overly critical and judgmental of both
themselves and others. This can destroy relationships at home, socially with
friends, and in the workplace.
Constantly striving for perfectionism can become a chronic source of stress in
your life which can lead to obsessiveness and mental challenges such as low
self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and even eating disorders. Perfectionists
often become depressed if their goals are unmet.
Perfection often leads to procrastination. These two concepts go hand in hand.
At some point, one striving for perfection will procrastinate even starting an
activity...because the perfectionist is waiting for the 'perfect time, place, or
conditions' to begin.
There is a big difference with these two scenarios:
1) You're the type of person who wants things done right, can get things done
without stressing yourself or others out, sets goals and deadlines, and meets
those goals with no issues.
2) You're the type of person who wants things done perfectly the first time
around, is terrified to make a mistake, may or may not get things done...and
either way, the process is very stressful for yourself AND others, and you miss
deadlines because whatever is being done is 'never quite right' when those dates
roll around.
The person in scenario number one is better labeled a 'high achiever.' The
person in scenario two is the definition of a perfectionist.
In my mind, there is always a better way, even if we haven't thought it up yet.
So, perfectionism, therefore, is an impossible destination.
I read a quote the other day that I just loved. 'To accomplish the perfect
perfection, a little imperfection helps.' (Dejan Stojanovic)
If you have perfectionist tendencies, here are a few recommendations:
1) Set big goals, but don't try to achieve those in one fell swoop.
Instead, break those big goals into mini goals, and work on achieving those, one
by one. In doing so, you'll achieve those big goals a little at a time.
2) Be nice to yourself. Don't beat yourself up. Learn from your mistakes.
Strive to do better the next time. Pat yourself on the back for the things you
do achieve.
3) Strive for excellence, but know when you're going too far. Some things
require you to be as good as possible (like if you're a brain surgeon). Some
things don't require that sort of super-high standard...like if you're leaving
for vacation and you didn't have a chance to empty out the dishwasher. Learn to
go easier on yourself with things that aren't going to have detrimental
consequences.
4) Get started on tasks you've been procrastinating on. If you're looking
for the perfect time to begin on something you really want to do, the perfect
time is now.
And my final bit of advice, rather than striving for perfection, strive for
progress...getting closer to your goals today than you were yesterday.
