How Much Time Do You Spend Sitting?

I recently ran a web poll on my web site asking GON readers, 'How much time do you spend sitting during your awake hours daily?' Here are the results:

38% I sit a lot...most of the day. I sit more than I stand.
29% I sit during most of my work day (around 4 to 7 hours).
23% I sit when I can...maybe an hour or two collectively.
6% I run around all day...I rarely sit down.
4% I am injured and/or in a wheelchair, so I have to sit.

I do a lot of writing, so I sit during a lot of my workday. But I teach fitness classes most mornings and evenings, so I'm up and active then.

Still, sitting for long stretches of time can increase the risks of a host of health issues down the line...back problems, hip problems, heart disease, deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, shoulder and neck pain, cancer, anxiety and depression...and that's just focusing on a few out of many.

In fact, even if you work out quite a few days a week, you can't reverse the negative effects of sitting for 5 to 7 hour stretches at a time.

If you find yourself sitting a lot, unless you're injured or are in a wheelchair, you'll be doing yourself a whole lot of good to follow some of these methods that will get you up and moving.

1) Use the 30/5 system. This means you stand up and walk around (or somehow be active) for five full minutes after every 30 minutes you're sitting down. If you're on the phone, walk around. If you're watching TV or sitting at your computer, be sure to get up in between to walk, do some jumping jacks, or to stretch. Set your cell phone alarm to remind you.

2) Try a standing desk. If you work at home, or if your boss will allow it, try working at a standing desk, high table, or counter.

3) Have active get-togethers. When you get together with friends or co- workers, do some of these meet-ups walking or biking together.

4) Get a pedometer. Try to get in 10,000 steps each day, but not all at once. Spread out your walking time throughout the day.

5) Try an audiobook. You can walk while you're 'reading'.

6) Find opportunities to walk. As long as you're in a safe area with lots of people around, park your car far from the building you're walking into. Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Refill your water every hour. Even if it's not yet empty, refilling it forces you to get up and move.

I heard a phrase the other day that really stuck with me...'stop sitting yourself to death.' A statistic that just popped up in the news...'Nearly half of Americans sit for far too many hours a day and don't get any exercise at all.'

And this applies to kids too. When I was a kid, I was outside playing wiffle ball, kick the can, ghost in the graveyard, and a number of other active games with my friends. Today's youth spend super-long stretches of time sitting while playing video games or texting with their friends.

This is not to say that you should never sit and relax. Everyone needs that. But part of being organized is being mindful of your health. Sitting is one of those cozy, comfy activities that we don't even notice may be harming us. 67% of my readers are sitting for very long stretches of time. That's in line with the average in America.

Let's make an effort to do ourselves a world of good and take a stand against sitting.
