____ 1. Celebrating others on their birthdays. When I go the extra mile
for a special someone on their birthday, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy
inside. I like to send a handmade card, or a nice card I find in the store. I
handwrite a sincere note about why I appreciate their friendship, and send it
via snail mail. If I'm going to see the person, in person, before his or her
birthday, sometimes I'll hand-deliver it, attaching a chocolate bar to the
envelope for a sweet treat. When a birthday is within two weeks, I write,
'birthday card for ___' on my shopping list (or my TO DO list if I'm making
one), and an idea for a small gift when applicable. Then I make a card or pick
one up during my next shopping trip and have it ready to mail or give on time.
____ 2. Putting things in one place Every item I own has a home...a place
where I put that item when it's not in use...so that when I need it, I know
exactly where it is. For instance, my keys are always in my purse when they're
not in my car ignition, my purse is always on the same shelf I designated for it
when I'm not out and about, and my ATM card is always in the same slot in my
wallet. It's very easy to mindlessly put something somewhere else 'just for now'
and then forget where that item was placed. It's better to take the extra moment
or two to think about that item's designated home and placing it exactly where
it goes all the time. It makes for less searching and less wasted time.
____ 3. Educated: A Memoir. If you're looking for a really good book to
read this month, this true story was phenomenal. Tara Westover was a child of
survivalists in Idaho and used to preparing for the end of the world. Her mother
was a midwife and a healer; her dad owned a junkyard. Tara's life was never
easy, nor safe. Her family was isolated from mainstream society...and they
didn't believe in schooling or modern medicine. Tara longed to be educated
though and this story details how she managed to do just that. I read this,
along with a bunch of my friends, for a recent book chat...and we all found it
riveting. For details, visit:
