Organized Living with Disorganized

We have all heard the maxim, 'Opposites attract.' While I am not too sure that neat and messy people attract each other, I think those characteristics may initially get overlooked and may later become a source of irritation and conflict.

Living with someone who chronically leaves clothes wherever they land, lets papers stack up, and doesn't see the disarray they left in the kitchen will likely drive your average neat person right up the wall. Conversely, the person who can barely get dinner finished before starting to clear the table, who frets when the mail is left out sitting for more than an hour, or who vacuums an entire room when only a piece of lint is visible may make the more disorderly person a bit agitated.

To keep the relationship harmonious, some things need to be sorted out and compromises reached with patience and kindness...with each person being willing to meet the other somewhere near the middle, without nagging or snide comments.

Try to understand the other point of view. Maybe your spouse/housemate's messiness actually has some order to it and he or she just has a different system. There could be an issue with ADHD. Going through the steps to keep things neat is simply difficult for them.

If your spouse is the super-neat and organized one, consider that messiness may make her or him anxious, as if somehow life is out of control. Sometimes it seems as if the person cannot even enjoy their life because of their constant quest for organization.

Either way, begin by engaging in a friendly, non-judgemental conversation about what makes each of you comfortable or uncomfortable. Consider what you feel the most flexible about.

Many couples compromise by deciding that some areas will be neat, but others need not be in 'perfect shape.' Each person may need some personal space to simply be themselves. 'Public areas,' like the living room and the kitchen, are most often the ones designated for neatness, while bedrooms or certain areas of the bedroom, since they are not in public view, can sometimes by in 'less than perfect' order without anyone else noticing. For many people, having their own closet and bathroom 'sections' are beneficial. Separate desks are good too if possible.

One friend of mine, who is very neat, insists the home she lives in to be very neat because she and her husband regularly have guests. Her husband, who has less strict tendencies when it comes to being organized, has his 'man caves' (as he likes to call them) in the garage and basement, and he keeps them as organized, or as disorganized, as he feels works for him. It's a compromise that my neat friend was willing to accept.

Learn to appreciate the qualities in the other person that your family benefits from, some of which are due to messiness, or to orderliness. There is room for both. My friend Georgia realizes that though her husband Scott is messy and does not always see the clutter around him, he is better than she is at spontaneity with the kids and engaging in play with them, not having the need to make sure everything stays neat and in place.

Scott also realizes that while Georgia's neat tendencies sometimes get on his nerves, she also makes sure they get places on time, bills are never paid late, and whenever he needs a document, she knows where it is filed in a drawer or on the computer. Knowing organization is not his strong suit, he can let her take care of all that.

Remember that when it comes to organized vs. disorganized, maybe it is not that opposites attract, but rather maybe they just come to complement each other.

'We all get lots of people. And maybe we don't always get to have them the exact way we want them, but if we can figure out a way to compromise, you know, then we can keep them all.'
