Organizing One's Life After a Damaged Relationship
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
I like reading your posts. They are very useful. So thanks a lot for such nice,
practical tips. I don't know if you can give me a tip on this: what's a mother
to do when her grown daughters are trying to declare that mom is crazy and
unfit? And insist mom go on meds? And these daughters have no medical
background. They are not mental health professionals, nor licensed to practice
such things.
And mom is the one that raised her girls as a single mom without any help and
support system. She doted on her girls like nothing else mattered. And the
daughters not only abandoned mom like used unwanted goods but telling lies about
their mom too? How do you organize your life after such callous, and cold-
blooded events?
You give advice on so many topics. Hope you can give one on this too. Any advice
would be helpful.

Maria Gracia responds...
Dear Hurting Mom,
I'm so sorry you're going through these family challenges and that you're
hurting. Reading your note was heartbreaking.
People see things from many different sides and perspectives. They feel what
they feel and do what they do for a variety of reasons...good and bad. Sometimes
people say things because they truly feel, in their heart of hearts, that
they're helping by doing so. Other times they say things for their own benefit,
not taking any facts into account. I'm not sure what events have transpired to
get to this point, but it's pretty clear that it's resulting in emotional
turmoil.
I will say this. Feeling the way you do is a true mental burden on you that
could greatly affect your physical and emotional health. Here's what I suggest:
1) Don't keep all of this to yourself. Even if you completely disagree
with what your daughters are saying about you, I recommend you talk to someone
(a family counselor) about your hurt feelings and what events have led up to
those feelings. In some cases, it may be suggested that you extricate yourself
from anyone in your life who isn't helping you live a happy, peaceful
existence...even blood-relatives in many cases. Sometimes he/she will suggest
you receive personal emotional therapy based on his or her findings. In some
situations, he/she may suggest family counseling (with your daughters if they
are willing) to help you mend fences. Working with someone who is trained in
this area may be able to help you begin the road to healing some of these
emotional wounds.
2) Get spiritual. Whether you're a religious person or not, doing
something on a daily basis that will relieve stress and lift your spirits can
help. One day you might go to a service at a church you enjoy, the next day you
might do some Yoga, the next day you might journal your feelings, the next day
you might sit quietly on your porch and do nothing more than think about things
you're grateful for, etc. Try to come up with a 7-day-a-week ritual (30 minutes
to an hour a day just for you) and make getting 'spiritual' a daily goal you
never miss.
3) Keep busy. The busier you are, the less time you'll have to sit around
allowing these bad feelings to fester. Do you work at a job? Do you spend any
time helping others, like volunteering at the library or a soup kitchen? Can you
help an elderly neighbor grocery shop or keep her company? Do lots of 'positive'
things in your daily life to help fill your hands and heart with joy.
Hugs...I can't imagine your pain and I hope the next time I hear from you, that
things are more peaceful.
