  TO DO This Week

TO DO This Week

____ 1. Bid farewell to some mugs. Do you have a surplus of coffee mugs, most of which you don't use? They may have been a gift or a souvenir. If you're like most people, you have your favorite one or two mugs, plus some you use for company. But you may also have many more stashed away in your kitchen cabinets that are gathering dust. Free the space and donate them. Someone somewhere will enjoy them, and you will have more room in the cabinet.

____ 2. Clean your washing machine. Washing the washing machine may sound counterintuitive. After all, the machine cleans things you wash. Why wouldn't the washer just stay clean? Chances are, your washing machine is hard at work each day, cleaning your clothes of dirt, germs, and grime. Some of that dirt gets flushed out. But a portion of it can build up in your washing machine and land back on your clothes. That's why it's important to clean your washing machine at least once a month.

For my specific washer (check your manual for cleaning yours) I start this process by checking in the recessed space at the top of the drum. I spray a solution of vinegar and water onto the recessed space and then wipe it clean. I then clean out the soap dispenser...and the liquid softener dispenser. The softener dispenser on my washer sometimes gets clogged with softener...I work it out with a chopstick (yes the type one would eat Chinese food with) that I specifically use for this purpose and store in the laundry room. I'm able to pull all that leftover softener out with the chopstick, wiping that excess on a paper towel.

Finally, I add two cups of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser and run it through a complete 'hot water' cycle. I then run another full cycle on the highest level and at the hottest water temperature, this time adding one-half cup of baking soda to the drum. When both cycles are done, I wipe the drum with a damp microfiber cloth.

If you have a new HE washing machine, you may be told to run the cleaning cycle with washing machine cleaning pods once a month...this is good practice.

So if you have not run a cleaning cycle on your washer in a while, add this to your TO DO list for the week.

____ 3. Spot clean the walls. Maybe the dog sneezed. Perhaps a visiting toddler left some fingerprints. Maybe something splashed. Who knows where those random spots on walls come from, but they do appear now and again. Grab a damp cloth or a cleaning eraser and go through the house, carefully wiping away those mysterious spots.

  In Closing

I don't have very many little fetishes, but the one I do have is that I like a particular mug to drink out of. It's just a small china cup, and I get very upset if my husband moves it.
