I've Decluttered. Now What Do I Do With It?
My friend, Cathy, retired last year and began planning a move to a new house.
Not wishing to haul a lot of unnecessary stuff to her new home she decided to do
a thorough cleanout. She began by clearing out an extra bedroom and then moving
furniture to the side. With the newly emptied space, she had a place to put the
things she decided she no longer wanted or needed. Next, she went room by room,
meticulously considering each object or piece of furniture in it to determine if
it would fit her new home and lifestyle. It took a few weeks, which she had
allowed for.
Then, however, she looked at it all and wondered, 'What now, what do I do with
it all?' We met for lunch and brainstormed to see what solutions we could come
up with for deciding what to do with her extra things. Some were obvious choices
to go to Goodwill. Others were more problematic.
Since the things she planned to let go included Christmas decorations from years
past, and some things her kids had done in school, she began by asking them to
come and take a look to see if there was anything they wanted. They were also
free to take furniture and other items she had decided not to move. They
surprised her by not taking nearly as much as she had expected. She found what
many others in her age bracket were finding. Namely, their grown kids did not
care about the same things and tended to be more minimalist in their own homes.
Next, she put the word out among her friends that she was downsizing and had
some nice things, but she no longer wanted them, and they were welcome to them.
One friend gladly took a couple pieces of furniture and some cookware for her
daughter who was moving into her first apartment.
There was still a good bit left and efficient as ever, Cathy separated it into a
'donate' area and another area which she felt uncertain about.
The donation part was easy, it could go to Goodwill or another thrift store, or
she could hold onto it for a few months to give to her church for their fall
garage sale fundraiser.
Last came the more difficult things. My friend had some lovely porcelain figures
she had once enjoyed, but no longer reflected her style. There were some silver-
plate trays that had been wedding gifts and a set of china that, while
beautiful, was just too formal for her lifestyle.
Some things she took to a consignment store. Looking online, she found a few
places that would buy her china to sell as replacements and another that bought
some of her porcelain figures. She also sold a few things on eBay.
Finally, she felt finished, and she had done a great job of decluttering. She
began the job early, so there would be no pressure from the upcoming move. She
felt satisfied with where her things were dispersed to, and best of all, when
she moved into her new house, she had just the things she loved and no extra
clutter.
