Happiness and Peace in My Senior Years
Maria,
In response to your
July 4th
Today is a Good Day for a Good Day newsletter issue:
I enjoyed the letter from your reader today. It was very wise and encouraging.
In case someone is trying to look up the scriptures given, the Romans passage
should be Romans 14:19 (instead of 24 -- there is no Chapter 24). I am 71 and
discovered the truth of these verses late in life, but I plan on living them
until the end of my life. I have found a happiness and peace in my senior years
that I never had in my younger years. Thanks for publishing this reader's letter
for us!

Our Throw Away Society
In response to your
July 1st
Have We Gone Mad newsletter issue:
Continued thanks for your always interesting newsletters.
I had to respond to something you said with this one.
Yes, I so agree with everything you said, but I had to take note when you
mentioned about the cell phone and that we don't always need an upgrade, but big
business just doesn't let us keep what we have. There is nothing wrong with my
phone at the moment, but I have to stop using it soon.
I hate swapping things I get used to, but I am told by my adult children, that
there comes a time real soon, that I JUST HAVE TO UPGRADE and lash out loads of
money to purchase a new one. No, ifs or buts, as the phone will no longer be
supported by the company that makes it and it then becomes a security risk.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with my phone and it serves my purpose well.
So it is easy to stick to what you have if you don't need to change it, and
believe me I want nothing more, but you sometimes can't.
I was also told by a repair man recently, that items have a built in
obsolescence. Even though we would like to keep using our products, regardless
of how much we spend or get the best brand name, we only get a few years of use
out of them.
So our rubbish containers continue to build up with stuff we really don't need
to dispose of, but we have to.
Where we are going on this planet, is rather a worry to me. Just how much
rubbish can the planet take when we are now a 'throw away society.'
It gives no proper lesson to our children to look after what they receive, or
have, and I just think it is all going down the wrong pathway to the future.
Come on world, we need to be more intelligent and big business should stop being
so darn greedy and MAKING US buy things we don't need. It is great for their
profit lines, but not good on so many other levels.
Does noone have a conscience anymore?
Sincere regards,

Response from Maria Gracia
D,
I hear you...it can be very frustrating sometimes.
If it makes you feel any better...my husband and I (for the most part) use what
we have until it has completely died. My older cell phone died a few years back
and that's when I upgraded...but my husband's phone (he's still using an Apple
iPhone 6...they're now up to a 10 Plus) is still working, and he has no
intentions of letting it go until it's completely unusable...no matter how much
the folks at Apple are 'encouraging' him to let go of his old one. Many
companies go through 'scare tactics' regarding security, or no more support,
etc. We don't like to be 'forced' into buying something we don't need, and we
usually don't do so.
In addition, we always check if something can be repaired instead of ditched.
Our 16-year old dryer was on the fritz a few years back, and a lovely local
repairman fixed it for less than $100. It's still working...knock on wood.
The only time we'll switch is when the repair cost far outweighs purchasing
a new one.
You're right...our landfills are taking on much of this burden. For devices
like computers, tablets, phones, and such, some companies have programs where
they'll accept them as donations and then refurbish them. Some of these
company names are Reconnect, The Wireless Foundation, Students Recycling Used
Technology, Komputers 4 Kids, and eBay Giving Works.
Thank you for your insightful letter!
