How Long Do Foods Last in the Fridge?

I don't know if it's a 'guy thing' or not, but if I am not careful to get rid of uneaten food in the fridge after a few days, my husband will dive right in and eat it. 'This should be fine, there is no mold on it' he says. Thank goodness, I'm good about serving leftovers within a day or two and checking the freshness of cheese, fruit and such...so this doesn't happen often.

So, what should you get rid of and when?

Most leftovers should be eaten within three to five days. Longer than that and the risk of food poisoning appears. This includes the lunch meat from the deli or opened packaged cheeses.

Many meat and poultry labels have a 'use by' date on them, but if it doesn't here are some general guidelines:

Raw poultry should be cooked and eaten within one or two days.

Raw ground meats should be eaten in one or two days.

Fresh beef, veal, lamb, and pork may last three to five days.

Bacon should be eaten within a week.

Opened packages of hot dogs should be eaten within a week. Unopened may keep for two weeks.

Leftover cooked meat or poultry, as well as pizza, should be eaten in three or four days. Leftover seafood should be eaten in one to two days.

Salads like chicken, egg, tuna, etc. may keep for three to five days.

Soups and stews are good for three to four days.

Cooked fresh vegetables will keep for three to five days.

Eggs in the shell will keep from three to five weeks. If in doubt, put the egg in a cup of water, if it floats, discard it.

A few words of advice before the food goes into the refrigerator.

Don't let cooked food sit out for more than two hours.

If you have more than will be eaten in the next few days, freeze what you can.

Be sure your refrigerator is at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

Be sure foods are packed as air-tight as possible.

Label leftovers with the date they entered the fridge.

While certainly not a foolproof method, smell the leftover before you eat it, and if you have any doubt, throw it away.
