I Live Alone and My Flat is a Mess. Help!
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
How to start? My flat is a mess! And not only that, I've run out of energy and
vision! I'm single, live alone, and I am retired so don't have to answer to
anyone for my mess.
This Reader Question was submitted by:
--Clare Leonard, London, United Kingdom
Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Clare,
Begin with a deep breath and tell yourself all is going to be OK. You can get
this done, you just need a little boost. You obviously want to have things more
organized and uncluttered, or you would not have written to me. So you know you
are on the right track and ready to begin.
First off, you mentioned you've run out of vision. I'm not sure if you mean
you're run out 'motivation' or 'creativity' or rather 'your eye sight.'
If you're talking about your eyesight, many people, as the years go by, develop
vision challenges. If you haven't been in for an eye check in awhile, make a
vision check appointment to evaluate. Perhaps there is something an eye doctor
can do to help with your vision challenges. I'm not sure how advanced your
vision issues are, but if they're very bad, you may need some outside assistance
to help with you get your house in order...perhaps a retired neighbor who
would like to help out.
If you meant your 'motivation' or 'creativity', let go of negative self-talk.
Don't think of yourself as messy or unmotivated. We can always make new
beginnings, reinvent ourselves to some extent, and get creative ideas from
others. Being retired and single can keep you from feeling any pressure to get
things done, but at the same time, it can be very freeing. You can do the
decluttering on your own time, at three a.m. in your pajamas if you like.
Gather some cardboard boxes. One will be for things to donate or sell, one for
keeping, and one for what you want to throw out.
Start small. Clean out one drawer. If something is broken, ripped, stained,
etc., put it in the box. Don't be tempted to think, 'The colors in this old
skirt are great, I could make a pillow cover.' More than likely, you won't, and
you will still have the skirt cluttering up your space. Consider how you feel
about each thing. Love the blue scarf, but that orange one is just not your
color? Let the orange one go. If you don't love, use or wear it, let it go. It
will bless someone else who will be delighted with it. And you will feel lighter
with less clutter.
How can you make the tasks more attractive to you? One woman I know takes a
brisk walk to a nearby coffee shop, orders a large coffee to go, and takes it
home to sip on while she works. She gets a little exercise, which helps her get
going. The caffeine helps a bit too, and the treat lightens her mood. She also
rewards herself when she finishes a large job, like a closet.
Sometimes even going through a drawer can seem like too much. If so, what else
might you do? Can you sweep through the house with a trash bag, filling it with
unread magazines, non-working pens, shopping bags you have no use for, etc.?
I hope I have given you some helpful suggestions for decluttering and
organizing. The fact that you really want to do something is a very positive
thing. I believe you will succeed, and I hope you will let me know how it goes.
