5 Little-Known Ways Clutter is Ruining Your Life

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of clutter is 'to fill or cover with scattered or disorganized things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness.' Clearly this definition does not put positive images in our heads. Having clutter lying around causes more than just a messy home. Clutter can also affect your life in other ways.

1) Clutter increases your spending

An organized home means a place for everything and everything in its place. Pantries are organized and papers are under control. If you need a battery or a light bulb, you instantly know where to find one. Closets have some rhyme and reason and countertops are free of junk. However, once clutter starts to creep in, everything changes. Having an abundance of clutter makes it nearly impossible to find what you need when you need it. This, in turn, can cause you to increase your spending. Need a flashlight, but can't find the one you have? Go buy another. Need to hang a picture, but not sure where you set down the box of nails? Run to the hardware store. Over time, these little emergency trips to the store to re-buy things that you already own (but can't find) can really add up as well as add even more to the clutter that you're already wading through. Being more organized keeps your home neater and, at the same time, can prevent you from having to repurchase things you already have on hand.

2) Clutter threatens your safety

Have you ever tried to walk through a wooded area when there is no cleared path? It really is no picnic. Not only is it considerably more difficult to navigate your way through, but you also run the risk of tripping on something and getting hurt. Clutter is like an uncleared woods path. It invites injuries into your home. Having a pile of shoes lying by the door is a sure-fire way to cause somebody to trip and fall. Stacks of boxes near your furnace can be a risk for a fire to start. Accumulating clutter slowly turns your cleared wooded path into that uncleared, hard to navigate walking trail we would be better off without.

3) Clutter jeopardizes relationships

According to Psychology Today, cluttering can affect our relationships with others, most especially our spouses or partners. Clutter can be the root of disagreements when one person likes an organized home and the other is more of a pack rat. Coming home every day to a messy, cluttered home can be a source of stress that can then branch out to our relationships at home. If one person feels stress about clutter, and having excessive clutter at home is the issue, this person will probably never be able to relax. Therefore, one person's cluttering habits directly affect another person's emotional well being.

4) Clutter causes isolation

Any time we know we are having friends over, we probably all clean up the house first. Most people don't want to have their homes looking like a tornado blew through when they are having friends over. So for those who have a cluttered home, the idea of having guests over may be too much to take. Being embarrassed of the mess and clutter can cause people to isolate themselves from others. They may feel they can't invite people over because of the clutter in their home.

5) Clutter kills your productivity

Ever try to work at a crowded desk? Trying to work amongst piles of papers, writing tools, file folders, or whatever else you may have lying around can really slow down your work progress. I know people who operate this way and it seems as if they are always struggling to find what they need when they need it. A cleared-off work space makes you more productive because you are not wasting time trying to locate lost items on a cluttered desk. When things are in their place, and always put back in their place after being used, you can be more productive when work needs to be done.
