It All Happened So Fast

As anyone who has ever been in a little fender bender can tell you, the accident probably happened really fast. One minute you're driving along and the next your rear bumper is badly in need of repair. The same can be said for anyone who has ever become a parent. One day you are needing to care only for yourself and the next you have this tiny, little person completely dependent on you for absolutely everything.

I remember being on vacation with my family. My now 15-year old daughter was only three at the time. We were in a science center looking at the Bernoulli Blower...one of those displays that holds a ball in the air against gravity. I'll never forget my daughter's joyous laughter as the beach ball hovered in the air...and her deafening screams when she slipped, my husband and I could not grab her quick enough, and her chin hit the edge of the display. She wasn't hurt badly...just a split lip...thank goodness. But again, it all happened so fast.

Life is full of these moments that come upon us, some that suddenly change our plans for the day...and some that alter our life circumstances for a long time. It just goes to show you that, in the blink of an eye, things can quickly change for us.

Knowing that things can change for us at any moment should not, however, be a cause for alarm. We don't want to always walk around in a state of 'what could happen.' The important thing is knowing how to deal with these sudden changes that may occur.

When something bad happens, first and foremost, don't overreact. Most of today's 'emergencies' quickly turn into things that happened last week. Although getting rear ended by another car is never fun, it is by no means the end of the world and it shouldn't be treated as such. Losing a credit card can be upsetting, but it is a situation that can be easily remedied in a short period of time. Slipping on ice and spraining a wrist may be painful and inconvenient, but it is one of those things that will get better over time.

The key is to know that, although bad things will sometimes happen, how you choose to deal with these situations is what matters the most. Don't make bad situations worse by dwelling on them and focusing on the negatives. Instead, know that when bad things happen, good things are sure to follow.

In much the same way, the way that you deal with the positives in life is also key. When something good happens, take the time to savor those moments. A promotion at work should be celebrated for the accomplishment that it is. When finally taking the vacation you have been dreaming of, take a ton of pictures to look back on later. A new addition to the family, although robbing you of sleep, is a time that you will someday wish that you could have back...so savor this time while you still have it.

Life changes quickly. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes for the worse. A sure-fire way to stay above water during all of the things that life has to throw at you is to take one day at a time. Try not to dwell on the negative things that happen. Think of all of the things that you have been through already and yet managed to overcome. When something good happens, make that your focus instead of dwelling on the days that were maybe not as great. You may discover that you have a lot more to be thankful for than even you realized.
