Cleaning out the Gunk...Yuck!

My husband cleaned the gunk out of our bathroom sink drains the other day. Two things came to mind: Yuck....and heaven bless my husband.

If there is one thing that gets neglected in most homes, it's the drains in sinks and showers. After all, once the water goes down, we don't really give it a second thought...that is, until the day arrives that we notice the drains aren't draining as well as they should be. While a plumber should be called for major issues, for more minor clogs, there are things we can do to keep our home's drains smelling clean and working well.

The kitchen sink

The kitchen sink is the sink that probably gets used the most in my home. The amount of use that it gets, compounded with the things that get dumped down the garbage disposal, can make this particular drain less than appealing. There are several ways, however, to keep the garbage disposal as fresh as possible. First of all, when using the disposal, make sure to run an ample supply of water through it and run the disposal for an ample amount of time to ensure that any food items are completely eliminated. Next, any time you have any citrus fruit peels, such as limes, lemons, or oranges, run them through the disposal. This is a natural way to freshen up the inside of your disposal. In addtion, once a week or so, I run some ice cubes through to help break up any deposits that may be lingering. Finally, there are products that you can purchase that are specifically designed to clean the inside of the disposal and to help keep it running well.

The bathroom sink

A quick way to clear a slow moving bathroom sink is to start by pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain, followed by a cup of baking soda and an equal solution of vinegar and water (1 cup water, 1 cup vinegar). Then, cover with the drain plug, wait 10 minutes, and then finally flush the drain with more boiling water. The chemical reaction that occurs between the baking soda and vinegar should help clear out any clogs that may be blocking your sink.

Shower drain

Our family has, on several occasions, fell victim to a slow running shower drain. That's when we pull out our handy dandy 'drain snake.' This is a long, plastic tool with serrated edges that you push down into the drain. You then pull the snake back up and the serrated edges grab on to all of the hair that has accumulated. I was shocked the first time we used it at how much of a blockage was actually in the drain. No amount of drain cleaner could have possibly cleared what we managed to effortlessly pull up in a matter of minutes. Although this is not the most fun job on the planet, it is a definitely a more cost effective way to clear out your shower drain.
