Organizing Lessons from Mr. Rogers

My 15-year old daughter. Amanda, just asked, 'Mom, did you ever watch the TV show, Mr. Rogers?' I said, 'Yes...and you did too when you were younger.' She didn't remember watching it. She was young when I'd play the Mr. Rogers Neighborhood DVDs I borrowed from the local library.

Apparently, one of my daughter's classmates is doing a project on the life of Fred Rogers, which is why Amanda brought this up. She chose a great subject.

Just for fun..and nostalgia...I watched an episode of Mr. Rogers on YouTube. It brought back so many fond memories, allowed me to slow down for a bit of time, and reminded me how many wonderful life lessons he taught...including organizing lessons. For instance...

If you watch an episode, you'll notice that when Fred Rodgers walks in the door, he takes off his sports coat and immediately hangs it in the closet. He doesn't leave this task for later. He takes a few moments and handles it now. There is no clutter in Mr. Rogers' home.

He also takes off his sneakers, when coming into his house from outside...and puts on his slippers. There is no dirt being tracked into Mr. Rogers' home.

He knows where his things are. In the episode I watched today, he quickly found the box of crayons he needed. This tells me that he puts what he owns away when he's done using each item. In doing so, they're easily found when he needs them.

Mr. Rogers communicates slowly, clearly...without jargon or words others cannot understand. The message he's aiming to give comes across beautifully to kids and adults. He knows that communication isn't about being collegiate, but rather about ensuring that the person listening understands what he's saying.

Positive self-talk is a regular lesson on this TV show. Mr. Rogers is always encouraging his viewers to 'have an I CAN attitude,' to 'be yourself,' to 'make a difference,' to 'try new things no matter what others think,' and to 'make a positive difference' whenever possible.

Fred Rogers always has something educational to share too. The episode I just watched took the viewer into a crayon factory, and demonstrated how crayons are made from start to finish. He's always learning something...and he's always sharing what he learned. We can all learn something from each other if we take the time to listen to others and to care about what they're saying, even if we're busy.

He also encourages us to allow ourselves time to be creative...to dream, to imagine, to give our minds permission to drift on new adventures. He knows that we all need a break from reality now and then to relax and refocus.

He always comes back from this 'land of imagination,' is sure the fish are fed, and reminds us to be neighborly. We all go through struggles in life, but having others around who care helps us get through those.

Yes, Mr. Rogers is definitely slower-paced than any of today's kids shows...and I feel that's a good thing. In fact, having had a crazy day today, slowing down to watch an episode of Mr. Rogers was a very good use of my time...

It allowed me to slow down my pace and breathe, to take a step back from the craziness of the day, to give myself the OK to do nothing more than watch and listen, to watch kindness in action, and to reaffirm that getting organized is often a simple matter of just going 'back to basics.'

In closing...I'll leave you with these famous lyrics...sing along if you remember the tune:

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood
A beautiful day for a neighbor
Could you be mine?
Would you be mine?

It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood
A neighborly day for a beauty
Could you be mine?
Would you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you

So, let's make the most of this beautiful day
Since we're together, might as well say
Would you be my, could you be my
Won't you be my neighbor?
